A white and black cat sitting up next to the book, "The Phoenix Keeper" by S. A. MacLean.

A fantasy zoo that is a love letter to the importance of conservation

The Phoenix Keeper by S. A. MacLean

December 30, 2024 by Dome'Loki 1 Comment

First and very importantly, Thank You CoffeeShopReader!  I thoroughly enjoyed The Phoenix Keeper.  It was a perfect book to close out a year that required lighter reading due to life challenges.  Also there was an added layer of fun as the zoo and location were clearly inspired by San Diego and our world famous zoo. As phoenix keeper at the magical San Tamculo Zoo, Aila is close to achieving a lifelong dream.  Overseeing a breeding pair of critically endangered Silimalo phoenixes and helping to bring them […]

If Disney’s WALL-E met Noah’s Ark and narrated by all the nature hosts you know

The Last Zookeeper by Aaron Becker

July 26, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

is known for their wordless picture books. And The Last Zookeeper is another gem in that genre.  It is always funny to me to write a review about a book with no words. There is a quote from Jane Goodall at the start, but that is it in this  due mid-March 2024 Disney’s WALL-E meets Noah’s Ark story. The theme is simple, environmentalism. However, it goes deeper. The emotional pull of what happens if we do not pay attention to our world and that environment is […]

A Hippo Walks into a Zoo

Hippopotamister by John Patrick Green

May 3, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When Red Panda leaves the broken zoo, in Hippopotamister by John Patrick Green, he comes back every so often to tell Hippo how wonderful the outside world is. And Hippo enjoys these visitations until one day Hippo is not content to just listen to the stories, he wants to leave and find a wonderful job for himself, like Red Panda has had so many off (and yes, folks, Hippo is a sweet, naïve lug of a hippo and did not see the red flags). And […]

Plumbing the Future and the Past for Thrills

August 31, 2016 by xoxoxoe Leave a Comment

I read these two books in close succession to one another. James Patterson and Michael Ledwidge – Zoo   Zoo cover art Patterson and friends’ book are always a quick, fast, beach read, and Zoo was pretty entertaining in parts. Taking what humans have done to the world – pollution, deforestation, cell phone towers, etc. – and taking to the nth degree how all of that technology might affect the world’s animal populations is a clever concept. But … the overall book was a bit clunky. I felt like the some […]
