I expected to enjoy Tithe a lot more than I actually did. A YA book promising dangerous fairies would normally be exactly the kind of thing I’d read with glee, but the rushed writing style really didn’t work for me. Sixteen year old Kaye spends her life moving from place to place, tagging along with her wannabe rock star mother and going to work rather than school in order to pay the bills that her mum is incapable of financing. When her deadbeat boyfriend attacks […]
She had me at Dolly Parton.
Dumplin’, whose real name is Willowdean, is a smart, kind, capable, funny, and fat (her term) 16-year-old in small-town Texas. Being sixteen is sucky enough, am I right?!, but the “fat” part causes even more trouble than one would expect for Dumplin’ since her mom is the local pageant queen-turned-pageant director, still living on her own pageant days, staying thin to fit in a 30-year-old dress. She was herself once Miss Teen Blue Bonnet and you better believe that’s a big effin’ deal in Clover […]
One of the few instances where the sequel surpasses the original.
This is an extremely suspenseful, and surprisingly thoughtful science fiction novel. Honestly, I’m kind of at a loss as to what else to say! But mostly that’s because my brain feels like it’s just been squeezed through some sort of bladed juicer and now I’m expected to have coherent thoughts. I think this series is one of the few where I’m so intrigued by the ideas behind the story, and the plot developments, that I’m actually okay with the characters being somewhat empty vessels. It’s […]
“We’re here because we’re here because we’re here because we’re here…”
“The thing about a spiral is, if you follow it inward, it never actually ends. It just keeps tightening, infinitely…” It’s hard to believe that The Fault in Our Stars came out five years ago! I didn’t even realize how much I missed John Green until I started Turtles All the Way Down. Maybe I never mentioned this before, but I love John Green. All of his books are fantastic, as you can see from my reviews of: The Fault in Our Stars, An Abundance […]
I do love nothing in this world so well as you. Is not that strange?
From Goodreads, because I’m lazy, and it sums up the book nicely: Six teenagers’ lives intertwine during one thrilling summer full of romantic misunderstandings and dangerous deals in this sparkling retelling of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. After she is kicked out of boarding-school, seventeen-year-old Beatrice goes to her uncle’s estate in Long Island. But Hey Nonny Nonny is more than just a rundown old mansion. Beatrice’s cousin, Hero, runs a struggling speakeasy out of the basement – one that might not survive the summer. Along […]
What if, what if, what if
When I found out a new Kristin Cashore book was coming out I was REALLY excited. When I found out it wasn’t a new book in the Graceling series, I was a little less excited, but cautiously optimistic. It wasn’t something I’d pre-order, but it was something I’d get on the library hold list for. I was super curious what direction this book would take and if I’d like it as much as the Graceling books. Luckily, I can say that I really enjoyed Jane, […]
