Everybody makes one another’s terrible mistakes

June 24, 2018 by Dusty Highway 2 Comments

I read this book too fast. I didn’t intend to. I picked it out as my travel book for a week of work and visiting friends in Boston, thinking I’d chip away a little each day. Then I read most of it on the flight out and finished it the next day because I just. couldn’t. help myself.  In writing these reviews for #CBR10, I’m beginning to wonder if the amount of detail I retain is inversely proportional to the amount of time it takes […]

YA Lesbian and Trans Love From All The Angles

June 18, 2018 by Polyesque Leave a Comment

I’d been wanting to read this compilation of lesbian YA short stores from Julie Anne Peters for a few years and so I was very excited when I discovered a copy in my country library collection. As a fan of Peters for a while, since I love how she draws me into believable worlds of lesbian and trans teen characters with humor, warmth, and great writing, this book didn’t disappoint. In fact, it went beyond my expectations in terms of variety. Without going into spoilers […]

Maybe it’s a holy freaking huge awesome deal

June 7, 2018 by Dusty Highway Leave a Comment

I am not a quick reader, but I blazed through Becky Albertalli’s Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda in one sitting. I haven’t seen the movie yet and didn’t know much about the book before I saw it while browsing bookstores on a recent trip, but I’m really glad I read it. The story begins as teenage Simon is blackmailed by a fellow student who inadvertently read Simon’s email exchange with another boy Simon knows only as Blue. They’re both closeted and want to keep […]

She kissed a girl and she liked it

June 7, 2018 by Malin 1 Comment

While this book can be read as a standalone, it is a sequel of sorts to Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda and I suspect you might get more out of it if you read that one first. The movie adaptation of said book; Love, Simon is currently in cinemas now (and it’s just as delightful as the book it’s based on). Leah Burke has a big secret and she doesn’t really feel comfortable telling anyone apart from her Mum, even her best friend Simon. Leah’s bisexual, but doesn’t […]

Generic, derivative YA fantasy in disguise.

June 5, 2018 by narfna 5 Comments

Two things: 1. I wanted to like this. 2. I did not like this. I will elaborate. (NB: I waited a couple of weeks to actually sit down and write this review, because I was so aggravated while reading I was afraid my review would come out more scathing than the book deserved. I’m glad I waited. Rant reviews are fun on occasion, but I prefer to be more level-headed for the most part.) I wanted to like this because: There are not enough diverse […]

“There’s nothing like a few severed heads to take your mind off politics…”

May 17, 2018 by Caitycat 1 Comment

“It’s a cruel, cruel world. And the people are the worst part…” Dread Nation invites its readers to imagine an alternate history of the United States. During the terrible years of the Civil War the dead began to rise. They feasted upon the living changing them into zombies, or shamblers, as they prefer here. The war was set aside to focus on the more pressing threat. The slaves were set free, but still weren’t given much freedom. Young black men and women were sent to […]
