A Classic Ray Bradbury Story

Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradury

March 27, 2019 by MarkAbaddon 4 Comments

There are books that you feel you know through one medium or another (television, movies, radio, etc.) which you then read and find that it is completely different than what you expected. This was the case for me with the brilliant novel Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury. I had been familiar with the story through the 1983 film, which scared the bezeesus out of me when I was a kid. The original novel, however, is so much better. The story focuses on […]

“Maybe I still haven’t become me. I don’t know how you tell for sure when you finally have.”

The Miseducation of Cameron Post by Emily M. Danforth

March 26, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

This is one of those books I can appreciate more intellectually than feel in my gut, though I think I’m going to chalk that up more to the style than anything else. I wasn’t in the mood for a slow, thoughtful, book that is more traditionally literary in style than I usually prefer. This book is LONG as well, almost 500 pages. Which is on the high end for contemporary YA. Aside from my own style preferences, I have no complaints. It’s a beautifully written […]

Sophomore Slump?

The Everlasting Rose by Dhonielle Clayton

March 25, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Honestly I am always worried when a debut author puts their second book out. I always worry that I am comparing it too much to the first. However, since the first book by Clayton was the first book in this series, I can’t help but compare it. And I have to say that the second book didn’t work for me at all. I was bored and just kept waiting for something (anything to happen). This book didn’t expand the world the reader had found out […]

Good, but not great. Even with a hero modelled on David Bowie in Labyrinth

Cover of Heavy Vinyl graphic novel

Heavy Vinyl – not so heavy on plot but still fun!

Heavy Vinyl: Riot on the Radio by Carly Usdin, Nina Vakueva, Irene Flores

March 21, 2019 by cosbrarian Leave a Comment

Heavy Vinyl appears to have gone through some adjustments over its publication.  Its title was originally Hi-Fi Fight Club and then for some reason they changed the name of the record store it is set in from Vinyl Mayhem to Vinyl Destination. Both changes are better, but many of the web descriptions of the comics have the old names so that’s confusing. Anyhow, spoiler alert: it’s about a fight-club in a record store! Sort of. I haven’t read or seen Fight Club, but this seems […]

A completely unsatisfactory review of a good book.

On the Come Up by Angie Thomas

March 18, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

Contemporary isn’t usually my genre, but this was really well put together. A good follow up to The Hate U Give. This is one of those reviews that makes my review backlog pile up, because I’m having a hard time saying stuff about it. So I’m just going to wing it and live with the fact that my review will not be as good as I want it to be, or say what I want it to say (whatever that is? I don’t even know). […]
