It’s like you’re a mirror/my mirror staring back at me/oooooh!

Otherbound by Duyvis, Corrine

May 14, 2019 by cosbrarian Leave a Comment

(Blame “It’s Gonna Be May” on my Timberlake quote) Nolan Santiago suffers from frequent blackouts. His family has been desperate to find the medication that will ease his daily and frequent epileptic fits. But the reason nothing is working is because Nolan isn’t having fits. When Nolan closes his eyes – even when he merely blinks – he is in another world, and in another life. Amara has been a servant on the run for most of her life. She was pulled from the palace […]

The Lying Woods by Elston, Ashley

May 13, 2019 by cosbrarian Leave a Comment

The Lying Woods is a quiet YA mystery surrounding a family scandal. Owen has just been pulled out of his fancy boarding school upon the news that his father has left town,  taking with him millions of embezzled funds from the fracking company he runs. The company employed most of Owen’s small town, so when Owen is forced to return home and enroll in the public school, he doesn’t have any friends left there – as far as they’re concerned, Owen’s cushy life was lived […]

“There could be love.”

The Giver (Graphic Novel) by Lowry, Lois; Russell, P. Craig

May 12, 2019 by cosbrarian Leave a Comment

I read The Giver for my sixth grade language arts class.  Sixth grade is apparently the year that our school decided we were ready to be ruined by literature. Between this, Bridge to Terebithia, and Where the Red Fern Grows, I don’t know how I had the will to read anymore. I guess that’s the amazing thing about well-written literature. It rips your heart in two and yet you keep going back for more! If you are one of the few people who haven’t visited this […]

Leah on the Offbeat – Fun Visit Back to Creekwood

Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli

May 12, 2019 by Rachel Leave a Comment

Finished on March 26, took 2 days to read 3 stars on Goodreads, actually a 3.5 Genre: Young Adult Rating 4/4 Young Adult Leah on the Offbeat is a follow up novel to one of my favorite books from last year: Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda. I devoured Simon in one night, and immediately watched the movie (not as good as the book but still fun). So I was very excited to visit the characters from the point of view of Leah, one of […]

Watered Down Everything

Fog Season by Patrice Sarath

May 10, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Just from the reading, I have a hard time telling whether or not Fog Season is YA or not. It really seems more YA but that’s not where I remember finding it in the bookstore. The case for YA is that it’s very character driven, the few adults present are villains, servants, or non-presences like mom Alinesse and dad Brevart. Also, the presence of romance, more a factor in this book than the first, is reasonably PG. The violence seems to be a bit less […]

A sword called Pooky Bear. And an absurdly ancient creature falling in love with a teenager. Shrug.

World After (Penryn & the End of Days, #2) by Susan Ee

May 10, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

This book has singlehandedly put me behind on my reviews by about two months. Thanks, book! Also, I’m blaming the book but it’s totally me. Obviously. I’m not sure I will actually be continuing this series. If not for my OCD (legit), and my “I might die if I don’t finish a book series” compulsion, or whatever the hell, I know I would have written it off already. It is too dark and scary for my poor brain right now, and the angel thing isn’t […]
