Foist This Upon Your Teenagers

September 12, 2015 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

I think this book is on verge of getting over-hyped by the book community, so even though I really enjoyed it, I don’t want people to go into it thinking it’s going to be the best young adult novel they’re ever going to read. There’s a lot to recommend Everything, Everything though. Nicola Yoon’s first novel brims with easygoing, pleasant prose and well-written characters. For a short book, she really brought the characters to life. That’s probably partly because she has such a talent for […]

An interesting young adult historical novel

September 12, 2015 by bonnie Leave a Comment

Eleven and a half years ago, I read a book that would (unbeknownst to me) awaken in me a craving for contemporary fiction. I had been raised on a steady diet of 18th and 19th century classic novels and had no idea that any other kind of novel existed, beyond the John Grisham-esque paperbacks that my high school friends liked to read. But when I took Much Ado About English, my introduction-to-the-major course at my beloved liberal arts college, I found a new love, though […]

Stranger in a strange land

September 7, 2015 by Malin Leave a Comment

3.5 stars This is the second book in the Remnant Chronicles, following directly on from The Kiss of Deception. It is impossible for me to review this without spoilers for the first book, hence, skip this if you’re not caught up. Princess Lia is a prisoner in Venda, surrounded by what she has been taught are violent and backward barbarians. Having accepted her feelings for Rafe, she may never have a proper chance to act on them, as they are both captives and the Komizar, […]

I think it might be quite emotionally exhausting to be a twin

September 3, 2015 by Malin 5 Comments

Did you miss me, guys? I’m going to try to finally tackle the massive backlog of reviews I have (more than a quarter Cannonball at this rate), so expect much more from me in the days to come. Jude and Noah are twins and have always been very close, to the point where they seem able to communicate without words, reading each other’s minds. During the summer when they are thirteen, things are changing. Getting ready to apply to a creative arts high school, Noah […]

There is an actual sharknado in this book

August 31, 2015 by tillie 5 Comments

There is an actual sharknado in this book. I feel like that should somehow be review enough. I mean… Maria Dahvana Headley seems like a wonderful person and I feel truly awful for saying this, but Magonia is a terrible book, it is unbelievable, boringly crafted and the structure of the story is completely imbalanced. I hated it, I was bored out of my mind – but the cover’s really pretty, so I guess that’s something. It starts out fine. Aza is your run of […]

A well-intentioned mess

August 24, 2015 by alwaysanswerb Leave a Comment

(2.5 stars) This was a tough book to read and will be a tough review to write. Love is the Drug is a very ambitious book that plots contemporary social issues and a story of developing one’s identity and independence against the background of a bioterrorist pandemic. Ultimately, I think Johnson just had too many ideas here and as a result several threads were underdeveloped and/or incoherent. Emily Bird, who goes by Bird, is from an affluent black family in Washington DC. Her parents are […]
