I am a huge dum-dum. During the five years I worked for Barnes & Noble, I got to read quite a few books gratis. Like, not only would we get to check out books (and Nooks! with unlimited ebooks!) from the store like it was a frickin’ library, but we also got ARCs and pre-publication copies (the ones that have been copy-edited) of books so we could talk them up to customers. I will admit that I took shameless advantage of all of these privileges, […]
“I don’t want you getting hurt.” “Everybody gets hurt,” she said. “You know that.”
I really loved this book. It’s so magical and romantical! By all accounts I shouldn’t be into this. I’m a grown up, gosh darn it! I need to file taxes and run errands! Yet this book makes me want to declare my undying love, shout at the nonbelievers, “You wouldn’t understand! You’ve never been in love!” It’s about two families of performers. The Palomas have a mermaid show and the Corbeaus perform as fairies on high tree branches. The families have a long-standing feud. Lace […]
Yet another fabulous CBR recommended book!
Oh, my fellow Cannonballers, you really do have the best taste around! Thanks to some rave reviews from ModernLove, badkittyuno, and narfna I put this on my library hold list. It came in right away, and from the first page I had trouble putting it down. This is a harrowing story of integration in Virginia in the late 1950s, and while not about real people Ms. Talley clearly did a lot of research. The story of Sarah Dunbar and classmates in this fictional town of […]
This book tried to do too much, and mostly failed at all of it. I’m very sadface about it.
So first of all, as a whole, I really love this series. I love the characters. I love the blending of sci-fi and fairy-tales. I love the epic, space-faring, international, futuristic scope of it. And I liked this book as well, but I didn’t love it. And as a book, and a series-ender, it was far from perfect. I’m really upset about not loving it, especially since each book since Cinder has been better than the last. I really thought Meyer had got her feet […]
The Hundred Thousand Meh’s
This books is called a hundred thousand kingdoms despite the fact that it takes place solely in Yeines head. And not in the intimate epic kind of way. In the “I looked into X’s eyes and I could see why Z loved him” replace X, Z with random God/Godess. Yeine is the ruler of Darr, at 19 years old, when her mother dies, mysteriously. Suddenly Yeine is called upon by her grandfather to be one of the potential heirs to the throne of the Hundred […]
Difficult or challenging things, yes. I wouldn’t really say impossible.
Dan Cereill (pronounced “surreal”, NOT “cereal”) is not having an easy time of it. He and his mother are left shocked, abandoned and nearly penniless after Dan’s father simultaneously announces that his business has gone bankrupt and that he’s gay. Dan’s great-aunt Adelaide recently passed away, the terms of her will stating that Dan and his mother could live in her house (although the house and it’s contents were left to the National Trust). The house is ancient, drafty, cold as hell and reeks overwhelmingly […]
