My favorite of the Emelan books.

December 2, 2015 by narfna 4 Comments

For the past several years, I’ve been sloooowly making my way through all of Tamora Pierce’s books, first with all the Tortall books, and then with Emelan. I’ve liked all the Emelan books, but have always preferred the Tortall books. This is the first Emelan book that has made that opinion waver a little. Maybe it’s just because this is the first time Pierce’s self-imposed structural limitations on this series have been lifted. The first four books were for children, about children (ten and eleven […]

Be prepared for a very flawed heroine with this one.

Oh, man. This was agony. It ended really well, but the process of getting there was SO STRESSFUL. Most of the way through this book, I wasn’t sure where it was going, or what the point of it all was, but at the end it all came together, and the reasoning behind all the other stuff that had happened became clear. I know if I went back and re-read this now, I would feel much differently about it. Eon (sometimes subtitled Dragoneye Reborn or Rise […]

Wish granting: Ruining lives since Aladdin first rubbed that stupid lamp

December 1, 2015 by NTE Leave a Comment

I think that most of us here are lucky enough to have missed out on social networks documenting our every teenage mistake.  (At least, I count myself lucky that the old IRC chats aren’t transcribed on my FB page for everyone to see: I can’t speak for all of you.) But I don’t think that social networks are ruining the fabric of social contracts or ridiculous things like that – I think I’m obviously too old and cranky for some of them (Snapchat: I’m looking […]

“Believing something existed and then finding out it didn’t was like reaching the top of the stairs and thinking there was one more step…”

Made You Up is about a girl named Alex who has schizophrenia. After changing schools after an incident, she is surprised to encounter a boy named Miles. They had an encounter as kids, though Alex assumed that he was in her imagination. Her main goal is to get into college and graduate without any more episodes. She knows that if anything else happens, her mother will admit her to a mental hospital. Alex narrates the story, which is interesting because she knows about her illness […]

Put Seven in the Series Title, But Then Only Make Six Books

November 29, 2015 by Quorren Leave a Comment

I know my past reviews of this series have not been great, but that’s because it had so much potential and it just kind of meandered all over the place.  This final book, though, took all of that potential, set it on fire and then stomped on the ashes.  For starters, why name your series The Seventh Tower and then only have six books?  It’s crazy pants.  I’m guessing relations soured between Nix and Lucas Books, which caused the series to come to an abrupt […]

I Guess It’s a Better System of Government Than A Watery Tart Throwing a Sword at You

November 29, 2015 by Quorren Leave a Comment

I honestly don’t remember if Milla made it back in the last book or in this one, so we’re going to pretend it’s this one because I do, at least, remember that this book was Milla heavy. So Milla becomes the War Chief of all Icecarls because…reasons.  She makes it back to The Crones, accidentally killing a Shield Maiden in the process, and gets them up to date on the upcoming war.  Since she has a shadow spirit now, she’s not allowed back into Icecarl […]
