How freaking short was this book? I’ll tell you — too freaking short! It’s quintessential Rainbow Rowell, but so sadly little of it. Covering three days in line to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Kindred Spirits is a lovely meditation on geekdom, “nerd culture,” and the unfortunately antagonistic relationship that can arise between men and women in “nerd culture” when people feel ostracized by the mainstream and/or the opposite sex and wrap themselves in the protective cloaks of their interests and similar people with […]

Destined To Be A Modern-Day YA Classic

March 10, 2016 by Gabby N 2 Comments

The town I grew up in was just this side of rural by the time I hit high school: they put up the first full stoplight (not just a blinking red or yellow) when I was in eighth grade. Our first McDonald’s came that year too, or the year after. I sometimes wonder what my life would have been like if we’d had the internet in high school. The internet was around when I was in high school, of course (I graduated in 2003). Everyone […]

Swoon Swoon Swoon

March 2, 2016 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

After two good, but grim murder books in a row, I need something lighter and this was the perfect pick. If you want to read something that will make you happy, this is that book. I didn’t think of it until after, but if you like Rainbow Rowell’s books, you’ll probably like Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda. Although it’s a young adult novel, it’s not dumbed down and the love story will make you swoon just as much as Fangirl or Carry On. Simon […]

It’s hard out here for a wizard

March 2, 2016 by NVVN Leave a Comment

Let me start off by saying this is the tenth book in the Young Wizards series and I waited six years for it. I didn’t re-read the series before starting the tenth book, so I kind of went into this blind. I feel that it’s safe to say that you don’t need to read the other nine books to enjoy this one, but it might make it easier to understand some of the past events characters refer to.  It’s not necessary, but if you’re the […]

Look at where you are. Look at where you started. The fact that you’re alive is a miracle.

It seems silly to try to summarize this novel. For a couple of reasons. One, because it’s a story that’s based on a fictional character from another fictional novel (meaning it’s a story made up by a character in a made up story). Two, because everyone who is familiar with Rainbow Rowell, and particularly her novel, Fangirl, already knows all about this novel so trying to describe it feels totally unnecessary. Especially given how many words have already been spilled all over the internet about […]

The Downside to being a Soul Sucker is No Kissing (Except Demons)

February 26, 2016 by Andrea Krieter Leave a Comment

Rating: 3.5/5.0   Summary: Layla is a half-demon, half-warden (gargoyle) and she can see souls. Not only that, but if she were to kiss someone with a soul, she would basically eat it. Layla doesn’t know who her parents are and was taken in by the Wardens, “the good guys”, who protect the human race from demons. She loves her family, especially Zayne, but any relationship would be doomed from the start. Then she meets Roth. Roth is hilarious, sexy, dangerous, cynical, and also a […]
