To Make a Thing as Simple as an Apple Pie, You have to Create the Whole, Wide World

December 5, 2016 by Jenny S 4 Comments

During this last post-election month, I feel like my emotions are out of control and too close to the surface.  Case in point, I was doing a first listen of my copy of the Hamilton Mix-Tape the other morning while making breakfast and basically was misty eyed during the whole first half.  Songs about immigrants and rising up and writing your way out of bad circumstances hit close to home (and I’m a middle-aged white lady so I can only imagine how this CD resonates […]

We Were Alright

November 16, 2016 by tillie Leave a Comment

I picked this up solely because I adored the title. The cover seemed calm and mysterious as it stood there on the library shelf. I wasn’t in the market for new books to read, but I thought “eh why not?” Unfortunately I never came to love we were liars. It was a pleasant enough read, short and light. I, however, was expecting a beautiful slow read about families and secrets and the special bonds formed when people grow up together. It wasn’t. Instead it was […]

“I am become a blade”

November 12, 2016 by Malin Leave a Comment

Spoiler warning! This is the third book in the Grisha trilogy and therefore NOT the place to start reading. This review will contain at least some minor spoilers for the previous books in the series, and who starts a trilogy with the third book anyway? Go read from the beginning, starting with Shadow and Bone. This review will be here when you’re caught up. Alina is shadow of her former self, trapped in tunnels underground, “protected” by the zealous Apparat (former high priest of Ravka) […]

“And they burned waxily ever after…”

November 10, 2016 by Caitycat 1 Comment

Save Wax is about a town called Paraffin, Vermont, and how some of its residents were murdered and replaced with wax figures. It’s also really, really funny. One of the residents, Poppy, was disgraced on a nationally televised talent show. She throws herself into serving as president of the drama club, the Giddy Committee. After her biggest bully pulls yet another prank on her, Poppy visits the local candle factory to get to the bottom of things. She ends up meeting a mysterious old woman […]

“Like Digby himself said: The truth is almost always disappointing…”

November 10, 2016 by Caitycat 1 Comment

Save Trouble Is a Friend of Mine is a mystery with an overachieving girl, Zoe, and a boy who is a young version of Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock. Digby is brusque and tactless, he even looks like Cumberbatch. He just shows up outside her door one day, and next thing you know, they are searching for a missing girl and investigating the possible cult across the street from her new house. A marked improvement on the first one

November 7, 2016 by Malin Leave a Comment

3.5 stars Spoiler warning! This is the second book in a trilogy. I will be unable to review the book without possibly giving away spoilers for the first book in the series, Shadow and Bone. Which is obviously the one you should start with if you’re interested in this series. After the rather dramatic show-down with the Darkling at the end of the last book, Alina and Mal are on the run, trying to get as far away from Ravka as possible. Having to hide […]
