Harmless YA fantasy with lots of potential for growth.

January 5, 2017 by narfna 10 Comments

See, this is one of those books where you just NEED half-star rating options. Cough cough someone should get on that (GOODREADS). This is a three and a half star book, straight up. I liked it more than three stars worth, but did have some issues that prevent me from fully endorsing it (which is my line for giving something four stars–also, if I would re-read it, and not sure if I would yet). I’m choosing to round down for now, because I think it […]

Rae Carson is one of the best YA authors out there

January 3, 2017 by yesknopemaybe 1 Comment

It’s official! Rae Carson can do no wrong. This trilogy was an utter delight and I plan on making as many people read it as possible. Over the past three books, these characters have become true friends and I’m a little lost now that the series is over. I have a feeling that these will become comfort reads in the same way that Harry Potter and a few other favorite books have. *** Spoilers below if you haven’t read the first book *** 3.5 Stars […]

Three murderous sisters

December 31, 2016 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

3.5 stars. I can’t fully bump this up to 4 stars despite the interesting premise and great ending. There’s too much set up here to really consider this one as having a full narrative arc. However, it’s a very promising start to a series and I’d really recommend it if you’re looking for darker young adult fantasy. Three Dark Crowns takes place in a world where every generation has a set up triplets born to the queen. These triplets are claimed by different factions and […]

It’s not easy being queen

December 31, 2016 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

I kept seeing friends rave about My Lady Jane on Goodreads so I procured an audio copy from the library to see what all the fuss was about. I am SO glad I sought this book out. Has there ever been such a charming young adult novel? I’m trying to think of one and coming up blank. Maybe Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell, but the types of charm are completely different in tone. My Lady Jane was co-written by three authors and the story is extremely […]

Bonus review: Happy New Year!

December 31, 2016 by Malin 3 Comments

I know I said yesterday that number 134 was going to be my last review of the year, but that was before I remembered that there was a Rainbow Rowell short story out there in the world that I hadn’t read. Also, it has it’s own entry on Goodreads, so even though it’s part of a bigger anthology, My True Love Gave to Me: Twelve Holiday Stories (eleven of which I have yet to read), I don’t feel reviewing it is cheating. 135 is a […]

“As it so happens, Mr. Jest, I’ve sometimes come to believe as many as six impossible things before breakfast…”

December 30, 2016 by Caitycat 1 Comment

Save Marissa Meyer, author of the fantastic sci-fi/fairy tale mashup of the Lunar Chronicles, is back with a retelling of the story of the Queen of Hearts from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Catherine is a Lady who is about to be engaged to the King of Hearts. Unfortunately, this isn’t the life she wants. Her dream is to open a bakery, which is improper for a Lady. When the King hires a new jester, Jest, Catherine falls in love. You can read my full review […]
