“In mind, God; In the hand, work.”

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali by Sri Swami Satchidananda

April 5, 2023 by Halbs Leave a Comment

This book is on the suggested reading list of Yoga With Adriene’s Adriene Mischler. It’s the fourth book on the list that I’ve read. While this book is called The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, it does not include all of Patanjali’s yoga sutras. Instead, it contains select sutras, as well as commentary on most of the select sutras. Sri Swami Satchidananda provides the translation and commentary. Sutra literally means “thread”, but here its used more to mean yoga aphorisms.  And yoga here is not hatha […]

“The practice of yoga teaches us to live fully.”

Light on Life: The Yoga Journey to Wholeness, Inner Peace, and Ultimate Freedom by B.K.S. Iyengar

November 3, 2020 by Halbs Leave a Comment

Iyengar is something of an ambassador of yoga. Even though he has died, he continues to educate and influence those curious about yoga’s practice and precepts. Personally, I first started reading Iyengar because he was on the reading list of Yoga with Adriene’s Adriene Mishler. The Tree of Yoga is the short and nourishing title on Adriene’s list, and that was the first one I read. This book is longer (around 300 pages) and still dense. However, while other books may be better introductions to […]

I (sometimes) like cute stories and I cannot lie

Malina's Jam: Walt Disney Animation Studios Artist Showcase by Svetla Radivoeva

Mindfulness at the Park by Teresa Anne Power

September 9, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I like cute stories but I do not always want cute stories. Yet, when I am in the mood, well, I’m in the mood! And if you’re in the mood for cute stories try one of these: Malina’s Jam: Walt Disney Animation Studios Artist Showcase by Svetla Radivoeva is a cute story, but one we have seen before. However, the illustrations are delightful and worth the read. I can see a series of books about Malina and friends. Malina is a sweet, shy hedgehog who […]

Yoga Concepts for Beginners

The Tree of Yoga by B.K.S. Iyengar

March 23, 2019 by Halbs Leave a Comment

A year and a half ago I was ashamed of myself for how much I had let my health decline. I was doing all the things you aren’t supposed to do, and I was not doing anything that I was supposed to do. While I was unhappy with how I looked, the real kick in the pants for me was that I had trouble playing with my young kids. As a result, I have been able to lose a lot of weight and gain a […]

Meditation and Pizza who could ask for anything more?

April 23, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Mediation Is an Open Sky: Mindfulness for Kids is a book that describes nine different mediation exercises for kids. However, they would also work for the adult looking to start meditating. Each page is one meditation that can help with ways to focus managing stress, fears and other challenges we face. It would be a good start for anyone.  Sally Rippin has added to Stewart’s text with fun and light illustrations. I have tried to do some medicating recently and this book is basically what […]

Reach for the stars; there goes Jupiter, here comes Mars.

January 30, 2016 by NTE Leave a Comment

When I was in Kindergarten, we weren’t all that worried about physical fitness.  I do remember we used to sing the song this review’s title comes from (originally from Romper Room, which I doubt very many of you remember, but here’s an Australian version, in case you need an earworm), but that was as far as actual exercise went in our classroom.  Fast forward a dozen years or so, to about a decade ago, and now I’m teaching preschool in Cambridge Mass, basically in Harvard’s […]
