There is an actual sharknado in this book. I feel like that should somehow be review enough. I mean… Maria Dahvana Headley seems like a wonderful person and I feel truly awful for saying this, but Magonia is a terrible book, it is unbelievable, boringly crafted and the structure of the story is completely imbalanced. I hated it, I was bored out of my mind – but the cover’s really pretty, so I guess that’s something. It starts out fine. Aza is your run of […]
This Book is Not Duggar Approved
To wash the taint of the Duggars and their awful ideas about women, gender roles, sex and sexuality out of my mind, I re-read Kristen Cashore’s Graceling. Graceling is Cashore’s debut novel, and if you haven’t read it, you really must. It is vibrant and self assured with strong plotting and memorable characters. The central character, Katsa, is a girl who seeks control over her own body and mind. The Duggars and their ilk would hate it. Katsa’s world, The Seven Kingdoms, is similar to […]
‘Snowball: Chronicles of a Wererabbit’ is a story of a white-haired wererabbit as she grows up and learns the dangers of the world around her. The story begins with the rescue of baby Snowball, following her rescuer as he takes care of her and waits for her to shift into human form. This development takes a bit of time and while I was intrigued by the story and very much enjoyed the gentle sense of humour during this part, I was thrilled when Snow started […]
Should I Stay or Should I Go Now?
I’m a sucker for a good YA novel. I’m an even bigger sucker for a good YA novel where there is tragic death or dismemberment or some sort of horrible disease or a dead boyfriend. I cut my teenage teeth on Cynthia Voigt. Izzy, Willy-Nilly had me convinced that if I ever got in the car with someone who had had even one beer, I’d lose my leg, too,or even worse. And I wanted If I Stay to be good. I really, really did. But […]
“I was not a hug person, so I didn’t know the secret of hugs until that moment: They’re not only one person’s effort. You have to hold each other up…”
Imagine that you could change your life instantly. In The Cost of All Things, witches called Hekamists cast spells for a price. These spells can erase memories or make you prettier or less depressed. Hekamists are under strict laws, but nobody stops them from performing spells for teenagers (Which seems incredibly unwise to me). The book is told by five teens. Winn has been suffering from severe depression and asks for a spell to feel better. Unfortunately, his chapters are flashbacks because we know that […]
If negative stars were possible, that’s what I would give this book.
A brief summary of the plot. An asteroid hits the moon and moves it closer to Earth, causing swelling tides which flood the coasts, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions that put massive amounts of ash into the air, turning summer into winter. The story is told through the diary entries of the sixteen-year-old Miranda, who goes from a normal high school student to a person fighting, with her family, for survival. If you’re like me and you love YA speculative fiction, that sounds good, right? And […]
