“Life isn’t easy, no matter where you are. You’ll make choices you think are right, and then suffer for them.” The Assassin’s Blade – Review on KatsCannon This review is my longest to date, I believe, and filled with spoilers for people who haven’t read any of Throne of Glass. Looking through it, there’s really only spoilers about Sam, and some hints of spoilers about later things. But if you are worried about any spoilers, just skip this one. Just know that these novellas are awesome […]
Wall-E + The Fault in Our Stars? (A review in which I am right and my husband is stupid.)
I loved this book and read it in a few days. I enthusiastically recommended it to my husband, who also enjoys YA dystopia, and was bewildered when he was not that into it. I thought it was scary and sad and funny and nuanced and infuriating. He thinks, so far, that it’s dumb and poorly written. This was turning into the book equivalent of The Dress so I turned to Goodreads to decide who was right because obviously that is a quantifiable right/wrong thing and […]
This Parabatai Thing Got Me Feeling Some Kind of Way
Listen… Listen… Okay, just listen… I’m weak. I should know not to get myself into this cheesy nonsense, but good grief I do every time. Let’s follow the path that led me down this rabbit hole: It all started in high school when my friends told me to read The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare, and boy howdy I really enjoyed them! Well, I never got around to reading the last two, but I really liked them. Then that HORRIBLE City of Bones movie came […]
“We were always stronger, and we were told that meant we were better.”
So, if you’re a YA reader, you’ve probably come across some of Sarah Rees Brennan’s stuff before – The Demon’s Lexicon, The Lyburn Legacy, The Bane Chronicles. I have only read book one of The Demon’s Lexicon series, and – to be honest – I forgot that I had read it until I went on Goodreads to post this book’s review and mark everything of hers as TBR. In my review of that book I mentioned that the author had created interesting characters, even if […]
World Building for Dummies
This is not meant to be a criticism of this book, which I enjoyed, but to say that world building, especially for dystopian future worlds, is very challenging. Red Queen won the 2015 Goodreads Choice Award for Debut Goodreads Author. I read the book description and although I am leery of YA dystopian series, I decided to give it a shot. I’ve read a few of these book series post Hunger Games, and this one I’ve found is the best at fleshing out both the […]
The Darkness Inside Us
My Heart and Other Black Holes is the debut novel from Jasmine Warga from last year. It is a YA novel that deals with two depressed protagonists in some of the truest descriptions of being a teenager with depression that I have ever read. This is a good book, but probably not for everyone. I was alerted to this book’s existence by the five star review from Annie for Cannonball Read 7. While she and I agree on some points, I only rated this book […]
