An unnecessary sequel?

January 10, 2018 by Carriejay Leave a Comment

Dash and Lily met through a red moleskin notebook filled with dares. They egged each other on, two strangers galavanting around New York at Christmas time. They got to know each other through their writing, until their bit of fun turned into romance. The Twelve Days of Dash & Lily picks up a year after our couple met in Dash & Lily’s Book of Dares, and after an initial courtship straight out of a Rom-Com the real world has slammed into them, hard. Lily’s beloved […]

Make a Wish, Take a Chance, Remake the World

January 7, 2018 by faintingviolet 8 Comments

I start all of my review drafts with the Cannonball Read number because that used to be how we formatted our titles way back in Cannonball Read Four. So, Holy motherforking shirtballs everyone, I just typed CBR10 for the first time as relates to a review. Let’s do this! I try to select my books carefully for the “big” reviews of the year, so while packing for holiday travel I grabbed my copy of I’ll Give You the Sun from my bedside table and tucked […]

What a strange, lovely little book.

January 5, 2018 by narfna 4 Comments

I’m a little torn on this one, honestly! I thought it was a bit slow for my tastes, mostly at the beginning, and I would have appreciated a bit more wallowing in emotions, but I also understand this is a book designed in part to ape Victorian conventions and mores, so perhaps I was never going to get the version of this book that would have pleased me best. And what a strange little book it was! This is an alternate history/speculative take on quite […]

“Fears can’t become full-blown phobias if you avoid them, and phobias can’t kill you if you don’t have them…”

December 30, 2017 by Caitycat Leave a Comment

I loved this book! I was just feeling lost and didn’t connect with any of the books I was trying to read, so I looked at what was available on the library website, and checked this one out. The Solar family was cursed by Death. Every member of the family has one great fear, and that fear will be the thing that kills them. Esther started her Semi-Definitive List of Worst Fears because of the curse. She writes down anything that scares her even a […]

THUG gave me all the feels

December 30, 2017 by teresaelectro 2 Comments

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas deserves all the hype and awards. The story centers around teenager Starr Carter who lives in the African-American community of Garden Heights while attending an expensive private school on the posh side of town. She has two sides of her life, two faces she shows each environment. Her white boyfriend Chris has never met her Dad. Her friend Kenya, who she shares a half-brother with has never met any of her high school friends. The two worlds collide after […]
