Not flawless, but Binti and Katniss could totally hang

December 5, 2018 by Bothari43 Leave a Comment

Usually when I review a book that’s already been covered on CBR multiple times, I try not to read anybody else’s reviews until mine is written. This time, however, I read everything the search function could find for me. I remembered from headlines that some people loved this Hugo/Nebula-winning book, and some people did not. I listened to the audio version on my way to Thanksgiving, and enjoyed it, so was curious what others thought. I think the audio version may have helped, having Binti […]

So many feels – CBR10Bingo: So Popular! *Bingo*

November 27, 2018 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

Elaine Lui of Lainey Gossip has been figuratively yelling at me since 2013 to read Eleanor & Park.  She brings it up regularly when talking about other YA books.  It was a book I kept meaning to get around to reading but just never put in the effort of getting my hands on a copy.  When I realized it was an option for the So Popular! bingo square, it seemed fated that I would finally read Eleanor & Par,k and complete my second bingo in the process. I could not […]

A lovely fairy tale that came at just the right time

November 12, 2018 by llp 1 Comment

I am quite sure I found a review of this book on the CBR site, and it sounded like a lovely warm book to read in what has been a challenging few weeks. It’s a Newberry Award winning young adult book, filled with emotion and magic and love. The book began much like a traditional Brothers Grimm fairytale; a village needs to leave it’s youngest child in the forest on a certain day every year, an offering to an evil witch so that she leaves […]

This book is delightful, and now I want a tea dragon

October 24, 2018 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

I don’t remember where I first heard about The Tea Dragon Society but I was instantly hooked by the name, as it contains two of my favorite things, tea and dragons.  While taking my ten year old gift book shopping (we always give books as birthday presents), I pointed out The Tea Dragon Society and said that I really wanted it.  She remembered and gave it to me for my birthday this past weekend! Katie O’Neill wrote an endearing story with charming, beautiful illustrations and wonderful characters.  The story […]

The book was better? Yes, yes it was…but the movie was really fun too.

October 16, 2018 by Nyx 2 Comments

In lesser hands, a novel about a girl, Lara Jean, having her secret letters she wrote to each of her five crushes accidentally mailed out, would be a fun but slight high school romp of a story. But author Jenny Han delivers something even better with “To all the Boys I’ve Loved Before”. Sure, this is a romance but more than that, it’s a story about sisters, family and the subtle way grief lingers and shapes us. Relatively sheltered and an introvert, biracial Lara Jean is […]

I was so very often confused, but that’s okay!

October 11, 2018 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

There are a lot of threads in this book moving to create a tapestry of a story.  This is definitely a fantasy, as their world is much different than ours. There is a great Bog that takes over a good part of the land.  The Bog is dangerous, but there is a town in the middle, the Protectorate. The Protectorate is ruled by the Elders. Every year on the Day of Sacrifice, the youngest baby in the town is sacrificed to the witch, to keep […]
