Volume 17 – In all the fighting, and teleporting, in and out of the cistern, the water reservoir has been nearly depleted.  Yuko can fill the reservoir and save Fai’s life but it involves people asking for wishes and being able to fulfill payment for the wish.  The end result is that Fai, despite his desire to die, will be saved by being made into a vampire with Kamui’s blood.  But because it is Kurogane’s wish, he must take responsibility for Fai, as such the only […]

Why this all began,  Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicles read through. Volume 14 – The volume opens with Yuko and Fei-Wang Reed throwing verbal barbs at one another while magically communicating across dimensions.  In Recort, Syaoran and Kurogane discuss the discovery that the people who killed Kurogane’s mother and attacked Syaoran’s country are from the same dimension.  This adds a new reason to keep dimension hopping. Sakura and Fai have been investigating and learned that the book that allowed Syaoran to see Kurogane’s memory is literally called, ‘the […]

I think I might be done with YA sci-fi.

Ignite the Stars (Ignite the Stars, #1) by Maura Milan

December 19, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

So many mixed feelings about this! I picked this up mostly because I needed to fill the “book by an AOC set in or about space” challenge for Read Harder, but it had been a while since I’d read any YA sci-fi, and I figured it’d been long enough that I might enjoy myself. I do not believe I have ever *really* enjoyed a YA sci-fi novel. The length and subject matter limitations on YA really cut back on what I enjoy most about sci-fi, […]

It’s the same story on repeat but still pretty fun

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

December 16, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Apparently the multi-narrator thing is now a trend in certain types of fiction. I heard this a while ago, but hadn’t thought on it much until I picked up Carry On. I’ve read Fangirl, so I had a basic idea but what I hadn’t realized was that Carry On uses one of my least favorite narrative styles, first person present, and the multi-narrator story. Together these things drag down what would otherwise be a great fan fic/twist on the “Chosen One” brand of hero story. […]

Too much the Chosen One

We Hunt the Flame by Hafsah Faizal

December 13, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I made what I now think was a mistake in reading We Hunt the Flame immediately after reading a pair of light parodies of the chosen one genre. The mistake was that We Hunt the Flame is very much as serious chosen one fantasy story, and coming after entertaining mockeries of the genre, ended up feeling a little too obvious about things that were probably supposed to be reveals. Zaphira is a girl but also the Hunter whom everyone thinks is a man. Her skill […]

The sun summoner who became a saint, concluding the Shadow and Bone trilogy

Seige and Storm: The Shadow and Bone Trilogy book 2 by Leigh Bardugo

Ruin and Rising: The Shadow and Bone Trilogy book 3 by Leigh Bardugo

December 12, 2019 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

Leigh Bardugo started off the first book in her Grishaverse, Shadow and Bone, with a neat mechanic, there was a “Before” section, and then chapter one.  It sets up the background of the book in a simplistic, story book format, referring to the main characters as boy and girl, instead of using their names.  At the end, there was an “After” section following the last chapter.  Same form as at the beginning, but wrapping things up.  She continued doing this for books two and three […]
