Why is the crow their emblem? Because crows remember.

Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo

April 1, 2020 by Dome'Loki 2 Comments

Crooked Kingdom is the second half of the duology started in Six of Crows.  When first we met our six protagonists, they were all down on their luck in general society but they had carved out places for themselves in the street life.  They took on what many considered an impossible job, succeeded, and then had victory snatched from them by a double cross and kidnapping.  The start of Crooked Kingdom finds everyone brought low, mentally and physically, but with a new mission, to rescue their comrade […]

Stop Scrolling!

Followers by Megan Angelo

Followers gave me some seriously creepy and unsettling feelings. It’s a novel told from various points of view across two timelines: one group of characters lives in New York City in the year 2015, and the other group lives in a futuristic planned community monitored by cameras and streamed to the rest of America in 2051. Think Big Brother live, 23 hours a day, for a person’s entire life…oh plus product placements. Around 2016, there is something called the “spill” that happens and changes the […]

King of Scars (Nikolai Duology, #1) by Leigh Bardugo

March 31, 2020 by narfna Leave a Comment

I thought this was miles in quality above the original Grisha trilogy, but I’m still a little conflicted in my reaction to it. In terms of the actual writing and my engagement with the characters, I enjoyed this book so much more than the original trilogy, though not nearly as much as the Six of Crows duology. You can tell she’s improved as a writer, but for my personal taste, this book relied too heavily on older storylines and characters, and I wish she wouldn’t […]

An impossible job, near certain death, terrible odds…I love a good heist!

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

Six of Crows was recommended to me before I had heard of the Grishaverse.  After receiving it as a gift in the 2018 Cannonball gift exchange, I discovered that it was part of a larger world setting and I should probably read the preceding trilogy first.  It took me a while to get around to the “Shadow and Bone” trilogy and then another length of time to get back to Six of Crows.  I’m glad I waited and read the trilogy first, otherwise, the world […]

First off, you MUST read the audiobook version of this, put that print edition down, the audio is where it’s at! West McCray is a public-radio type audio personality who specializes in stories about small nobody-towns in America.  One day at a gas station, he learns about a local girl who has gone missing. Sadie Hunter was grieving the recent and brutal murder of her sister Mattie when she disappeared. Local police believe it to be a simple case of a runaway not worth pursuing, […]
