“But somehow I’m still here, and he’s still here, and even though I still feel like a hopeless case, this thing between us doesn’t feel hopeless at all.”

Any Way the Wind Blows by Rainbow Rowell

July 27, 2021 by Dome'Loki 8 Comments

CBR 13 Bingo Square: Shelfie THIS BOOK!  After having reread Carry On and Wayward Son, I was primed for Any Way the Wind Blows.  I devoured it so quickly that I immediately reread to be able to slow down and better absorb the story.   Rowell brings the Simon Snow trilogy to a satisfying close but what an emotional journey to get there.  Carrying their hearts on their sleeves, Simon and Baz are so vulnerable and continually bracing for the pain that might come.  Penelope’s decisions and the […]

“But it was a mistake thinking of that as an end. There is no end. Bad things happen, and then they stop, but they keep on wreaking havoc inside of people.”

Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell

CBR 13 Bingo: Rep – Rowell’s portrayal of Simon’s depression is a very frank picture of what depression can feel like and how it affects relationships. Contains Spoilers if you have not read Carry On and Wayward Son. This is Part Two of my rereading books one and two of Rainbow Rowell’s, Simon Snow trilogy, before starting number three, Any Way the Wind Blows.  Part One can be found here.  And if you’re interested in my original thoughts on those two books, they can be found  here. […]

A Crooked Kingdom Full of Reps

Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo

July 8, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 2: Rep The more I thought about it, the more I think Crooked Kingdom (Six of Crows 2) really does work for the Rep square. I saw an article from Tor.com that argued that Nina rep’d for body positivity arguing that it is unusual for a main character/heroine who is female and larger and not just there for the comic relief or for the eventual slim down/glow up. While I do agree with this, I think it’s a bit more of a factor in […]

Again with the Eðians!

My Contrary Mary (Mary, #1) by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, Jodi Meadows

July 8, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

**30 Books in 30 Days** Book 15/30 Thanks to Netgalley and Harper Collins for the ARC! It has not affected the content of my review. I have just finished this and it was glorious. I didn’t know we’d be returning to the same world that their first book was set in! I’ve missed those Eðians. You can read this without having read My Lady Jane first, but I would reccomend doing it anyway because that book is wonderful. That makes this book an unofficial sequel. […]

Much Beloved but Not by me

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

June 25, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I’ll just say this up front: I do not get the hype around this series. I realize that I am not the original target audience (it’s dark YA fantasy), and that Six of Crows is not the original introduction to the Grishaverse, it’s a side-series. That said, I’m kind of wondering about the Netflix show Shadow and Bone because from the sound of it, if you’ve read the books, you don’t like the series, but I haven’t read (most of) the books, so maybe? Actually […]

“Today I am choosing to love the person in front of me.”

They Went Left by Monica Hesse

June 21, 2021 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

A few years ago, I reviewed Monica Hesse’s YA novel Girl in the Blue Coat, a story of intrigue and mystery set amongst the resistance in Amsterdam during WWII. It was an excellent novel, and Hesse has done it again with They Went Left. This YA novel features another teenaged girl as protagonist, but this time the story is set in the immediate aftermath of the war. Nazis exterminated Zofia’s parents, grandmother and aunt, and they nearly killed her as well. She is suffering from […]
