the spectacular now

January 9, 2014 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

The Spectacular Now follow Sutter, a high school senior in Oklahoma, as he navigates life mostly drunk. His life changes when he breaks up with Cassidy at the same time his best friend gets into a serious relationship. He meets Aimee who is a SciFi nerd with a crappy home life. The two forge an unlikely relationship (Sutter believes he is some sort of mentor to Aimee) and change one another’s lives. Loved it. Tharp perfectly captures an aimless 18-year-old in the middle of nowhere, […]

The One That Started It All

January 7, 2014 by TyburnBlossom 3 Comments

Here it is: the book that started it all. We open with a first person prologue from the point of view of a murderer gloating over his or her victim: Anna. I have a feeling a lot of these books are going to open this way. He glimpses the […]

My 1st book is The 5th Wave

January 4, 2014 by Mrs. Taffy Leave a Comment

My first book of the new year was The 5th Wave by Rick Yancy. I had seen a pretty amazing book trailer for the book on the Penguin Young Readers channel on YouTube (check out the trailer at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKkEAIs4pJc), and thought it would be an interesting read. If I had paid closer attention to the trailer, I probably wouldn’t have wanted to read it. My dad was a big Sci-Fi fan, so I grew up with Star Trek, Star Wars, Lost In Space (the original series), […]

The Raven Boys – Solid paranormal YA.

January 3, 2014 by ModernLove Leave a Comment

Full disclosure: I love YA. If I manage to make it through this year and challenge, I’m willing to bet that the majority of my reviews will fall into that category. No shame! The Raven Boys has been on my list of books to read for quite some time. I finally got a copy and, at first, wasn’t sure what to make of it. It jumped around between three or four characters a lot in the first few chapters, but once it finished the set […]
