“Laughing doesn’t make bad things worse any more than crying makes them better.”

May 10, 2014 by Caitycat Leave a Comment

The furthering adventures of young Jacob and the island of misfit mutants. Not to be too spoilery, in the second book the peculiar children set off to find a ymbrne to help Miss Peregrine. On the way, they encounter more danger and a scary new threat that could destroy them all. The major draw of this series for me is the pictures, all old black and white pictures. There are plenty of new ones in Hollow City, so I was satisfied (Even though a lot […]

“The trick is not to mind”

May 10, 2014 by Caitycat Leave a Comment

Despite reading the description, I expected this to be a girly paranormal romance. It’s really nothing like that. Half Bad is like a grittier Harry Potter, though it doesn’t share much with the boy who lived other than the fact that both deal with magical peoples and are set in England. I really liked this book. It’s different from a lot of teen books I’ve read, and I appreciated the grittiness. My only issue is that it’s always a pain to have to wait for […]

“But maybe you carried your demons with you everywhere, the way you carry your shadow”

May 10, 2014 by Caitycat Leave a Comment

Panic is a game played by the outgoing senior class. Anyone brave enough has to perform a series of dares, some of them dangerous enough to cause injury or death. Whoever wins gets the pot, thousands of dollars that can change the lives of the teenagers in the small town. It has its moments, but I wasn’t really into the book. You can read my full review here.

Not How Explosions Work

May 10, 2014 by TyburnBlossom Leave a Comment

After Ski Weekend, this book was mostly a refreshing return to form. We open in Shadyside High with some kids arguing in a library. If it had just opened with some narration from a killer, I’d feel right at home. Jill, Andrea, and Diane are in the library avoiding studying when their friends Nick and Max arrive and manage to set a file folder on fire. Admittedly, that sounds like the kind of thing I’d have done in high school…if I somehow lost about 50 […]

“He was trapped in the disaster of himself and couldn’t find a way out”

May 10, 2014 by Caitycat Leave a Comment

This is a story about the Scar Boys, a little known band made up of four high school students. It’s told by Harry, who was tied to a tree in a lightning storm as a child and has severe scars all over his face and body. For a little while they are on top of the world. As all VH1 Behind the Music episodes reveal, this doesn’t last forever. You can read my full review here.

Where can I get a hanging moose sweater?

April 17, 2014 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

I picked this one up based on the recommendation of Caitlin’s review. No One Else Can Have You is centered around 16 year old Kippy Bushman, and told to us by her in first person narration. It is also a YA read and Ms. Hale’s first novel. Kippy’s best friend has just died. More specifically, she was murdered. It is the first murder that anyone in Friendship, WI (population 688) can remember. The town is in shut down mode until the suspected killer is apprehended. […]
