Where Do You Get Your Story Ideas?

Story Behind the Book, Volume 3 by edited by Kristijan Meic and Ivana Steiner

March 4, 2022 by sabian30 Leave a Comment

This short collection of author essays by speculative fiction writers is an informative little series. Inside the 37 authors describe why and how they wrote their respective books (or series of books). At only a page or two, the excerpts seem more like introductions to their books then lengthy information on their writing processes, but the insights into the way they write is inspiring and interesting. I’m ashamed to say I only recognized one of the writers, Adrian Tchikovsky, because of his Children of Time […]

Fear, to a great extent, is born of a story we tell ourselves…

The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron

January 5, 2022 by carmelpie 2 Comments

“Have no fear of perfection – you’ll never reach it.” ― Salvador Dali I got this book early last year when I was trying to be more creative, but in the most structured way possible. One thing I fear, which I think many of us fear, is doing something badly. We fear that we will start something, it will be bad, and that means that we are bad at it so what’s the point of even trying? This book is exactly what I needed. It’s […]

Neil Gaiman is My Chesterson

The View from the Cheap Seats: Selected Nonfiction by Neil Gaiman

November 18, 2021 by Ale Leave a Comment

I’ve had The View from the Cheap Seats on my TBR for a long time. For once, the university library had a book I actually wanted to read, so I checked it out while waiting for my local library request to come in. Gaiman’s collected nonfiction rides the gamut from his introductions to many novels, to speeches given at award ceremonies and conventions and interviews from his career as a journalist, as well as musings on writing and recollections on the people and books that have […]

“Some werewolves are hairy on the inside.”

Danse Macabre by Stephen King

July 29, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

This was good, but it is very dated. He focuses on horror in the thirty year period of the 1950’s to the 1980’s, although he does have a foreword to the latest edition where he brings up more modern movies, but that’s only about thirty pages, and the rest of the 400 pages are still focused on horror that was all released before I was born (and I’ve never liked it enough to seek any of it out). It’s also less interesting to me personally […]

The Plot of The Plot is a Very Good Plot

The Plot by Jean Hanff Korelitz

July 9, 2021 by msvreadsbooks Leave a Comment

Who owns a story? A plot? That is the core issue of this novel. Jacob Finch Bonnen is a struggling writer who has fallen into teaching creative writings in MFA programs after publishing two novels. The first was well received and landed him on a list of new and noteworthy authors, and his second basically confirmed his place in the obscurity that can only be experienced by the once-great.  During a low-residency MFA program, he meets a student who changes his life. Evan Parker is […]

Okay, it is a lot cheesy, but also a cute love story

Autoboyography by Christina Lauren

June 29, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Note: all images shamelessly stolen from the internet as I really got into the Simon & Schuster free online books this month.   I was on the fence about Autoboyography by Christina Lauren (or Christina Hobbs and Lauren Billings). I was not sure I was reading for another GLBTQ book so soon after the others I had read, and frankly thought the cover too cute. And when I got into the book, the “meet cute” romance tone of the story explained the cover. And yes, […]
