Snow Days

Snowy Farm by Calvin Shaw

One Snowy Morning by Kevin Tseng

January 20, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

It is January in New England and we finally have gotten some serious snow that was snow and not just “crappy stuff” that actually stayed for a little while. If we could get rid of the extreme nasty cold temperatures it would be perfect. Yet, this not so nice weather has allowed me to stay inside and read. And as I was not in the mood for a “deep dark serious reading” for most of the weekend (though I did do at least one of […]

Refreshingly Cool

To Build A Fire by Christophe Chaboute

September 22, 2019 by Claire Badger Leave a Comment

I settled in to read this quick graphic novel on a warm autumn evening. Sitting in my Muskoka chair in the backyard, sun streaming down on me, I soon felt the cold and frost of Jack London’s classic tale brought to visceral life by the pen of Christophe Chaboute. You’d be tempted to think this is a black and white comic right until the first fire is lit, which is when we finally see flashes of red, orange and yellow, but a closer look will […]

If you don’t like the cold snow, try this warm treat

When the Snow Falls by Linda Booth Sweeney

February 22, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I liked the cover art of When the Snow Falls illustrated by Jana Christy. I was hoping the text by Linda Booth Sweeney would be as big of a hit. Unfortunately, it was not. Spoiler: The fact that all the sudden the parents disappear, and the kids are now at Grandma’s house is odd. They went from the country to the city in what seems like a blink. The one scene that looks like travel happens is the grandmother is pushing the children in a […]

Let it snow, let it snow!

I Wish it Would Snow. by Sarah Dillard

January 28, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Sadly, I did not like the book, I Wish it Would Snow. The only thing that saved it for me was Sarah Dillard’s illustrations. They are sweet and there are some details, but they are not overwhelming. The colors are bold and bright. They do help move the story along. At first, I thought this would be a wordless-picture book, but then it started up with sparse text. And continued with the sparse text. However, the story is realistic. The fact that the child/narrator of […]

It is time to enjoy the snow!

Little Owl's Snow by Divya Srinivasan

January 28, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Little Owl’s Snow is pretty much what you see is what you get. Divya Srinivasan’s character, Little Owl, wants to explore the winter forest. Yet, as many of his friends have gone off to hibernate, Little Owl is doing this solo. And of course, in due time, Owl starts missing them. Spring cannot come soon enough for him. However, the slight twist to this story is Spring does not come by the end of the book. Owl still must wait awhile longer. This is unusual […]

Hopefully this is not a sign of six more weeks of bad books

Brownie Groundhog and the Wintry Surprise by Susan Blackaby

January 7, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Looking at the sale books at work, I found Brownie Groundhog and the Wintery Surprise. As Groundhogs day gets so little love, I figured this might be one of the few books out there about this fun holiday. Spoiler: It’s not. Susan Blackaby’s story is about three friends who spend the day having a picnic in late December, only at the end, to have Brownie (a groundhog) go off for her winter’s nap. She tells her friends the fox and the rabbit, she will see […]
