Not Enough Beatrice and Benedick, Way Too Much Claudio

Much Ado about Nothing by William Shakespeare

October 10, 2025 by Tracy 3 Comments

cbr17bingo – play (spoilers aplenty ahead) I hate Claudio. I feel like that shouldn’t be my takeaway from this play, but here we are. The play centers largely on Claudio and Hero, who early in the play are engaged to be wed. Beatrice and Benedick are the secondary enemies-to-lovers couple, but I can certainly see why some productions of the play choose to emphasize their role because by modern-day standards, the Claudio/Hero relationship is somewhat unpalatable. Claudio is a favorite of the prince Don Pedro, […]

Tis Hot, the Weather, and the Wars…

Henry V by William Shakespeare

August 8, 2025 by Jake 1 Comment

Read as part of CBR17 Bingo: play. Say this much for Shakespeare: he had a sense of humor. And an irreverent one at that. There’s no other way you can possibly appreciate Henry V without it. Considered the last great English king of the Plantagenet line (or maybe not, depending on how you feel about Edward IV) before dying an untimely death and giving rise to the Wars of the Roses that brought his family down and gave us the Tudors, this play starts off not at […]

Because I’ve been posting most of my reviews due to Bingo, I haven’t kept up with the leftover ones until now. Hope everyone had  a good summer. It’s my least favorite time of year but this one wasn’t so bad. Heartsick***: I took this book too seriously when I tried to read it the first time. I relaxed and enjoyed the ride the second. Goofy fun, nothing more. Brief Answers to the Big Questions****: I do enjoy listening to Hawking’s desire to push the boundaries […]

Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Balls, and it’s a war story

Henry V by William Shakespeare

September 2, 2024 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 14: Détente I’ve re-read Henry V the Shakespeare history play because I’m teaching it and haven’t actually re-read it for a good long while. This play both ends and begins with questionable peace between England and France, so it’s suitable for this square. I don’t actually remember my first read, just being really impressed by Kenneth Branagh’s film version, or perhaps more specifically Patrick Doyle’s score. The choral bit after the battle of Agincourt is pretty impressive. One big thing I noticed upon re-reading […]

Ian McEwan (1); William Shakespeare (1-2)

Nutshell by Ian McEwan

Hamlet by William Shakespeare

Macbeth by William Shakespeare

February 13, 2023 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

Nutshell – 4/5 Stars “So here I am, upside down in a woman.” Ian McEwan has been writing and publishing near on 50 years. His fiction can be a little hit or miss, with some of his more famous works like the Booker Prize winning Amsterdam often seen as his weakest. For me this is simply not true because he recently published an embarrassing parody of Kafka about the Boris Johnson administration called The Cockroach. This is also one of his more recent books, and […]

Drama Queen

Antony & Cleopatra by William Shakespeare

November 6, 2022 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

Ah, Shakespeare- takes me right back to high school English class! (Truthfully though: I hadn’t read this play nor seen it performed, but the general strokes of the story were familiar.) Ready? Here goes: Marc Antony, the great Roman general, is uneasily sharing power with Octavius, Julius Ceaser’s nephew, and a third general, Lepidius. Antony has come to Egypt as part of the triumvirate’s previous battles against outside enemies and fallen in love with the seductive Egyptian Queen, Cleopatra. Now that the outside enemies have […]
