Soldier’s Pay

Soldier's Pay by William Faulkner

September 5, 2022 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

William Faulkner wrote I think four novels that took place outside of his fictional Yoknapatawpha County. Others take place in other places but explicitly refer back to the county as well. This is one of those novels. It’s also his first novel, and it’s also one of his few works that takes on the idea of flying, this and his novel Pylon, and a handful of stories. He was fascinating by flying and tried to join the US Army’s flying corps, the British flying corps, […]

As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner

Assassins of Thasalon – 3/5 Stars I fear I am starting to get some Penric-fatigue, and I hope it’s not Bujold fatigue as well. I have to say that the previous two entries in the series did little for me, and this one was more interesting, but won’t stay with me much longer. It’s also possible that’s where I’ve been all along with Penric, who is part of the World of the Five Gods, the world that Bujold has created that I care the least […]

The Unvanquished

The Unvanquished by William Faulkner

March 1, 2022 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

If someone is ever interesting in getting into Faulkner, you could very well start with this book. I still think the best book to start with is actually As I Lay Dying because it primes you for Absalom, Absalom! and The Sound and the Fury, but this is a good introduction into the ideas and themes that carry throughout most of his work. It’s also, I think, the only book where he tackles the war head-on and specifically the war and the aftermath during Reconstruction. […]

Go Down, Moses

Go Down, Moses by William Faulkner

February 14, 2022 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

My estimation for this book continues to grow as I read and re-read throughout my life. I first read it in college, and the complexity of Faulkner’s portrayal of interior lives and families was about all I could handle in one of his novels. I could also handle the stark portrayals of race and gender in something like Light in August as well. But this book which attempts to complexly show interiority of white and Black characters, how those characters interact not only within a […]

I almost gave up on my white whale 100 times…

The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner

September 20, 2021 by Rooooomie 2 Comments

Bingo: white whale (plus another bingo: ring) CW: racism, misogyny, castration, cruelty I think there is a good reason that ‘classic’ literature, the kind we’re taught in school, is made up of a lot of white whales. When a book is held up as an example, as a work that has near-universal things to teach us, it takes away some of the enjoyment, as it adds an element of work. We’re not supposed to simply enjoy it, we’re supposed to take something away from it. […]

Collected Stories by William Faulkner

September 23, 2020 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

I think a lot of people end up reading a little bit of Faulkner (a novel or three) and I feel like most people end up reading “A Rose for Emily” in college (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gs-bVMs1LKU&ab_channel=TheZombiesMusic) but there’s a lot of hidden gems in this 900 page collection of his short fiction (there’s also a volume of uncollected fiction that I might end up looking through at some point). He was one of those writers, who for about 35 years or so was just writing constantly. Not […]
