Just as good as the first, maybe better?

November 30, 2018 by narfna 2 Comments

I was not disappointed by this sequel. P.S. writing this on my phone. I don’t actually have much to say about the book. I enjoyed it a lot, and I was worried that I would have forgotten everything that happened in the last book, and I sort of had, but Scalzi makes it easy for you to catch up. Cardenia is still emperox, Kiva is still a profane little firecracker, Marse is traveling around giving lectures about the flow collapse, and the effing Nohamapetans are […]

I Am The Consuming Fire

October 27, 2018 by Emmalita 2 Comments

Good news! I didn’t have to wait until 2019 to get The Consuming Fire. Don’t read this review if you haven’t read The Collapsing Empire.

In the Future, Humans Are Still A-Holes

November 1, 2017 by Emmalita 2 Comments

When I posted my review of The Collapsing Empire, Narfna told me I had to read Fuzzy Nation. I can’t remember where that conversation happened, but while I was waiting for my next Audible credit, I would remind myself not to get distracted. Fuzzy Nation was my mission. Other than Narfna’s recommendation and the cover, I had no idea what the book would be about. Fuzzy Nation is an eco-legal thriller in space. Humans still live on Earth, but they have expanded resource gathering to other planets. […]

Climate Change, in Spaaaaaace!

September 20, 2017 by Emmalita 3 Comments

Humans have migrated into space and lost contact with Earth. They live now in an Empire they call The Interdependancy. There is no faster than light travel, the laws of physics forbid it. There is the Flow. The Flow isn’t well understood, but it has pathways, and those paths allow ships to travel between planets in months rather than years or centuries. The Empire is called The Interdependency because it is deliberately designed so that each colony depends on the others to survive. Each colony […]

Stop Waiting and Do Something

July 13, 2017 by Emmalita 3 Comments

On the spaceship Intrepid, low level crew members die at an alarming rate. The premise is right there on the cover: They were expendable…until they started comparing notes. Whether you have watched the original Star Trek series or not, most people know that the guy in the red shirt was going to die. In Redshirts, Scalzi explores what would happen if, rather than actors who went home at the end of a day of shooting, the characters were just going about their lives until everyone started […]

Scalzi’s new space opera: Please, sir, I want some more?

May 6, 2017 by narfna 10 Comments

It’s been almost two years since The End of All Things was published, and I’ve been jonesing for some new Scalzi. Unfortunately, all The Collapsing Empire has really done is make me want more. It’s like how when you bake a fresh batch of cookies and you eat one hot from the oven, how that one cookie does nothing to curb your craving for cookies. All it makes you want to do is shove five more cookies down your gullet. (Your potentially upset tummy is […]
