Jumping on this 2012 bandwagon

Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple

August 6, 2019 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

What a fun read!  Like the movie Booksmart, no sooner was I finished reading this than I began to push it onto other people- you’ll love this!  Its hilarious! A comedy of errors with heart!  It is all of those things, and this is me pushing it onto CBR readers (those of you who haven’t read it already- I realize I’m late to the party). Semple’s novel is a modern family story set in Seattle, centred around genius architect Bernadette Fox- Branch, her tech wizard […]

Quirky, adorable mystery – perfect beach read.

This was a book that I voted for in our book club selections because of seeing it on several “Must Read” lists. I had no preconceived ideas about the plot, just knowing that others liked it. Fifteen year-old Bee is a typical teenager with a very untypical mother. Bernadette is outspoken, opinionated and is the definition of “marches to the beat of her own drum”. In a previous life she was an acclaimed architect, with designs that were revolutionary and award-winning. Now she is bordering […]

Runaway…

Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple

July 11, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Wow. So this book bounced all over the place and my brain still feels fizzy because there was a lot of things going on, but boy did I love this book! I loved Bernadette, Bee, their weird dog Ice Cream, and I loved the emails and letters between two women who I would have throttled if I ever met in real life (Audrey Griffin and Soo-Lin). This book was in parts funny and sad and back to funny again. I picked this because I wanted […]

Where’d You Go Bernadette – What took me so long??

Where'd You Go Bernadette by Maria Semple

April 7, 2019 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

For some reason, this book languished in my “to read” pile for quite some time. I can’t quite explain it, but I found something about the cover to be off-putting, and didn’t think I was going to like it. As the old adage goes though, judging by a cover is problematic, and I found this book to be utterly engrossing and delightful. Once I finally picked it up, I was hooked. A really unique story, told creatively, with rich and vibrant characters. And so so […]

“I’m not too good when exposed to people”

October 22, 2016 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

Over the summer I cancelled my SiriusXM membership because between borrowing CDs from the library and downloading books off Overdrive I almost always had an audiobook to listen to in the car. Typically, I leave my book listening to the car but not with Where’d You Go, Bernadette? I couldn’t put it down (so to speak) and since it was downloaded onto my phone I didn’t have to. Bernadette went with me to my lunch break at work, while I was cooking and even while I was […]

Satire with a heart

March 7, 2016 by yesknopemaybe 1 Comment

3.5 stars. This is a strange little book. I know a lot of cannonballers have read this and it was so popular that most people will have at least heard of it. It’s been on my TBR for ages and ages honestly. I might not have read it if I’d known it was satire. My preferred satire delivery method is via the screen not the printed word. It makes me uncomfortable to devote several hours to it. Luckily, Where’d You Go, Bernadette is a cross […]
