Standing Outside a Broken Phonebooth…

Down the River Unto the Sea by Walter Mosley

March 1, 2019 by Jake 1 Comment

This is the first Walter Mosley book I’ve read that didn’t feature his famed detective Easy Rawlins. I liked it, with some reservations. We’re introduced to Joe King Oliver, a former NYPD detective who was framed and now has to make a living as a PI, trawling the streets of New York. Mosley’s Oliver is similar to Rawlins: a man who has been wronged yet has faults of his own. Mosley is quite good at making one feel sympathetic to his male protagonists while also […]

Nightmares and Dreamscapes

Cinnamon Kiss by Walter Mosley

February 7, 2019 by Jake Leave a Comment

Dreams have always featured heavily in Walter Mosley’s Easy Rawlins series. But this one in particular had a lot of dream sequences and descriptions of dreams. It kind of wore on me after awhile; I felt like Mosley was trying to stuff extra scenes to raise his page count since the plot was so thin. I don’t know what it’s like dealing with publishers but note to writers: if you can get away with a good story in 190 or 220 pages, it’s cool. I […]

The Detective Who Makes Black Lives Matter

October 1, 2018 by Jake Leave a Comment

I’ve read most of Walter Mosley’s underrated Easy Rawlins series and, while this is far from the best, this is probably his rawest work. It’s also perhaps an apology for how he has written for female characters in the past. Taking place in the shadow of the 1965 uprising in Watts led by black citizens after yet another act of police brutality, it lends a setting that is never far from the events of the story. Whereas, Mosley contextualizes in Easy’s dialogue about the circumstances […]

Zombie fungus?

March 26, 2018 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

Another short and more or less forgettable book I listened to while moving boxes and cleaning floors. I picked this one up because it showed up on a list of 50 Horror Writers who aren’t Stephen King or something like that. I like Stephen King a lot and so I figured, sure I will read more horror. And I was also review some more here soon. Maybe I don’t like Horror so much as I like Stephen King. Anyway, I also generally like Walter Mosley, […]

Some books I heard while reading the new Brandon Sanderson

November 27, 2017 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee – 5/5 stars So somehow, Trump ruined this day of all days with his racist remark to Navajo Codetalkers at a White House ceremony. This is also the day I finished this book….it’s like I made it happen by being so clearly reminded of the inhumanity of US history and the sheer resilience and patience with which Native peoples have had to ask for not only basic decency, but for agreements they made to be upheld. And so the […]
