Flexitarian-Ish but definitely could be better about the flex

Mostly Plants by Tracy Pollan, Dana Pollan, Lori Pollan, Corky Pollan

November 30, 2024 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Mostly Plants is book by the Pollan family, as in mom and sisters of Michael (Pollan). The forward, byt the food writer himself, explains the general philosophy (which you already know if you’ve read any of his other work) and introduces the family. Sort of. He includes the history of the sisters going veggie, but never directly explains that they’re his sisters. Unless I just missed that bit, but if I did, he could have been clearer. He also claims that most of the meat […]

On eating compassionately

The Happy Vegan: A Guide to Living a Long, Healthy, and Successful Life by Russell Simmons, Chris Morrow

September 11, 2022 by Halbs Leave a Comment

It’s a natural time for change: new school year, new season, new job. So, I decided to freshen up my routines across the board. Since I’ve felt sluggish, lately, I’m trying to switch up what I’m eating. Libraries have like a million food books, so I just ran through that aisle and threw all of them in my cart, Supermarket Sweep-style. The Happy Vegan had a great title, so it’s the first one I read. It’s written by mogul Russell Simmons. I don’t know much […]

Come for the Recipes, but maybe not the Puns

Husbands That Cook by Ryan Alvarez, Adam Merrin

May 7, 2022 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Husbands That Cook caught my attention first with the title, and then with the notice that it was a vegetarian cookbook. The husbands of the title are Ryan and Matt (apparently they have a blog but that’s outside my pop culture knowledge) who pre-pandemic seem to have been big into trying out all the various local (LA-ish) restaurants; a lot of the recipes are international, but not always the same old, which is nice. Yes, there’s the expected shakshuka, bibimbap, samosas, ramen, and a tagine, […]

Cooking my way through this one

East by Meera Sodha

May 23, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I have started to really make an effort to cook my way through a cookbook before looking for a new one; problem is, the cookbook I had planned to start the year with turns out to not be much to my taste. Library browse to the rescue, I think. I picked up East by Meera Sodha, which features both vegan and vegetarian which isn’t a mix you usually see. It focuses on Asia in general, but with a mix of Japanese, Indian, and Chinese cuisines […]

I added the shocking image not for shock, but for an example of what you are getting.

Our Animal Neighbors: Compassion for Every Furry, Slimy, Prickly Creature on Earth by Matthieu Ricard

January 19, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I thought Our Animal Neighbors: Compassion for Every Furry, Slimy, Prickly Creature on Earth would be an environmental book because of the cover. Instead, Matthieu Ricard, Jason Gruhl and Becca Hall created something a little unexpected, but honestly, not surprising. This book is very pro vegetarian. (Sidebar: it is funny I find this book now as a Facebook friend has been a vegetarian for years and recently started posting more pro memes, comments, and articles). It talks of the community of Earth. How people and […]

I do love to bake but with this book I’m not so sure

The Great British Baking Show Love to Bake by Paul Hollywood, Prue Leith, the Bakers

January 17, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

I may have to re-impose my occasional moratorium on cookbooks, specifically baking, for a while. The Great British Baking Show released the annual cookbook to accompany the most recent season on Dec. 22; I pre-ordered. Due some unforeseen delays, I only just got the book a few days ago. The problem I have is that I only just started working my way through Pieometry; I’m a good ways through my Paul Hollywood book (How to Bake), but there’s still a lot to get through with […]
