Turns out that preserved lemons are pretty darn tasty

Big Vegan Flavor by Nisha Vora

March 28, 2025 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

I may have been doing a little retail therapy at Target when I saw a cookbook I hadn’t seen before: Big Vegan Flavor. It had a discount sticker on it too, although it was probably one of those that’s designed to distract from the unreasonable original sticker price. Book cam home with me anyways. I have never been that much into the food blogging or You-tubing worlds, and this apparently descends from that realm. The only thing I really hold against Big Vegan Flavor is […]

One of the Better Bosh Books

Bosh! by Henry Firth, Ian Theasby

January 5, 2025 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I get books for Christmas, sometimes from myself. Especially if I’m in a favorite indie bookshop. That’s how I ended up taking home two cookbooks, one of which was Bosh!. This is a series I’ve reviewed from before, but I don’t think I’ve done the original, first in the series. Basically, this is a British vegan food Youtube channel (probably; there’s a chance the website plus videos was first) that went viral before that was a thing, and then there were books. The books have […]

Cooking by numbers equals 20 percent chance of cauliflower

Vegan Buddha Bowls by Cara Carin Cifelli

March 22, 2024 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

It’s an interesting thing to me that sometimes cookbooks often have favored ingredients not directly related to the theme or title; case in point, Vegan Buddha Bowls seems enamored of cauliflower with lesser attention to sweet potato, carrot, and cabbages. For example, in the first section, “Beautiful, Bountiful Buddha Bowls”, there are 17 recipes. Of those 17, 4 rely on sweet potato, and 5 on cauliflower as the main starch. The salad bowl have 1 sweet potato and 2 cauliflower out of 15 (1/5, 20%); […]

An Asian option for Veganuary, especially if you like eggplant

Vegan Asian by Jeeca Uy

December 30, 2023 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

For probably my last review of the year, let’s go with the second cookbook I plan on starting the year with Vegan Asian: A Cookbook. Turns out this is another blogger turned author publication, btu it looks pretty promising. Most everything looks doable and there’s only 1 recipe that uses an unusual ingredient not needed anywhere else in the book. I hate that, when you’re given an ingredient to use with not substitution options and no other uses for what the author ahs to know […]

Bean Counting Lesson Book with Monkey Bread and Some Other Stuff

Hungry as Hell by Bad Manners LLC

November 5, 2023 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I’m still not quite sure about how I feel about the Bad Manners brand series of vegan cookbooks. On the one hand, the first one had a lot of good recipes in it, but the brand had some major issues with racial insensitivity and it took several years for that to get addressed publicly. Then, under the rebrand, a lot of random cussing does not equate bad manners, so that didn’t quite fit, and the tone was different, like the cursing was different and just […]

Here for the poutine and creme brulee, but not so much most of the rest

Bosh! Meat by Henry Firth, Ian Theasby

September 10, 2023 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 18: You Are Here I’m taking this bingo spot as an opportunity to look at a place I am at intellectually and culinarily with a certain type of trend; I’m kind of over the culinary fascination with plant-based meat, and the cookbooks this has spawned. I pre-ordered Bosh! Meat quite a while ago, and now that I’ve got it, I’m kind of over the main premise before I started; however, it turns out that a good chunk of the book actually doesn’t really deal […]
