Not much edge to the veg

The Edgy Veg by Candice Hutchings

September 21, 2025 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 16: Culture The Edgy Vedge is a bit dated, but it demonstrates both vegan food and Youtube content creator culture. Full disclosure 1: I don’t hang out on Youtube a lot. That said, I can see how the “quirky-cute” vibe the writing tries for might have been popular in the video version; I have not looked that up. The written version gets a little annoying, like someone is trying to hard to be funny. First of all, I see very little “edgy” in trying […]

N is for Not

Not Too Sweet by Jessica Seinfeld

August 24, 2025 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 9: N is for Not (‘N’ Square) Not Too Sweet is a little bit of a misnomer. Just because the dessert recipes avoid sometimes white sugar does not mean they are low sugar or low sweet. Maple syrup seems to be the general swap, and that’s not exactly low sugar or unprocessed. Dates might be more natural, but those are really sweet. White sugar is still present in some things too. The options for “[something]-free” (gluten, grain mostly) and vegan optional don’t really seem […]

Back to basics in a good way

Plant Based Cookbook by Trish Sebben-Krupka

April 20, 2025 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I somehow only just realized that the bargains shelves at Barnes and Noble actually have an online equivalent; I was trying to reach a threshold of some sort (maybe sped X to get Y off?) and found the $5 Plant Based Cookbook. It’s kind of basic, but I still think it might have been a good impulse grab, so to speak. I think what this one’s going to be best for is a set of recipes including things I remember liking before but not quite […]

A Theory of What Makes for Good Plant Based Substitutions (and review of a restaurant cookbook)

Sugar Taco at Home by Jayde Nicole, Nia Gatica Campos, Alan Campos

January 5, 2025 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

I mentioned in my previous review acquiring two cookbooks at a local favorite shop that is no longer local; the shop is Boswell Book Company in Milwaukee WI. The second cookbook is Sugar Taco at Home, Sugar Taco apparently being a vegan taco joint in LA. There’s a little more vegan preaching in this book than I’d like, but no so much that it totally overtakes the recipes and yummy food. For a restaurant book, this surprisingly doable, and not overly chef-fy. Being a restaurant […]

One of the Better Bosh Books

Bosh! by Henry Firth, Ian Theasby

January 5, 2025 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I get books for Christmas, sometimes from myself. Especially if I’m in a favorite indie bookshop. That’s how I ended up taking home two cookbooks, one of which was Bosh!. This is a series I’ve reviewed from before, but I don’t think I’ve done the original, first in the series. Basically, this is a British vegan food Youtube channel (probably; there’s a chance the website plus videos was first) that went viral before that was a thing, and then there were books. The books have […]

Oatmeal Can Be Predictable and Interesting at the Same Time

OATrageous Oatmeals by Kathy Hester

December 30, 2024 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

So the only reason I found OATrageous Oatmeals is because I was at my usual used/new bookshop selling my annual purge of my shelves and while the buyer was going through the suitcase full of books, I browsed. I like cookbooks and plant-based cooking though I’m not actually vegan in practice, and I’d kind of been craving oatmeal. Perfect timing for the book I didn’t know I needed. For an impulse buy, this actually turned out pretty well. The first half is, as you would […]
