Great vampire premise, bad vampire execution

April 13, 2014 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

This was the second selection of my brunch book club, not my usual fair, but I was excited to read a bit of Young Adult fiction because my life as of late has been busy so at least I could get another book read under my belt. I’m a big vampire fan so I went into this cautiously optimistic. So many vampire tales have let me down tremendously (I’m looking at you, Twilight) so I didn’t get my hopes up, but went into this looking […]

The one where Jim Butcher turns things up to 11

April 12, 2014 by Malin 5 Comments

Seriously, I don’t even want to say anything about the book here, for fear of spoiling things. I’m not going to put a picture of the cover, I’m just going to say that the book completely blew me away. I kept being amazed at the things Butcher put poor Harry through in this book, and just the lengths to which he went to completely turn everything that had gone before on its head in this book. If you have read the book, and are curious […]

She blinded me with magic

April 9, 2014 by alwaysanswerb 2 Comments

This will be a comprehensive review for the six currently published books in the Kate Daniels series, which do not differ significantly in tone or quality, but each have their own novel-length mystery or case and each contribute to an overarching theme story. Differences in my ratings have to do with my particular interest in the specific plotline and advancement of the series-running arch in each book, but overall, I like this series, and if you like one you’ll find the rest worth reading. There […]

The Firey Heart – It’s about vampires, not some kind of STD.

March 25, 2014 by ModernLove Leave a Comment

School is really getting in the way of my reading and reviewing. Who needs an education anyway? Onto the good stuff! The Firey Heart is the 4th book in Richelle Meade’s Bloodlines series, which is a spin-off from the 6-book Vampire Academy series. I’ve been reading these since the first VA book came out about seven years ago, and I’ll be dammed if I stop reading them now. I have a horrible compulsion to see these things through, no matter how terrible the series gets. I have […]

4.5 stars This is the second book in the series of The Others. While you get enough information to read it without having read the first one, you should really do yourself a favour and start with Written in Red. It’s the best paranormal/urban fantasy book I read last year, and deserves to be read by as many people as possible. This review will also contain minor spoilers for the first one, so you may want to come back and read it once you’ve finished book 1. Having […]

Not Your Average Vampire Tale

March 17, 2014 by Mrs. Taffy 3 Comments

Paranormal fiction is all the rage right now with beautiful teens falling for sexy vampires and such, but the vampire story I just finished is most definitely NOT your typical vampire story. In fact, there are no sexy vampires and not even any blood-sucking anywhere in this book. There is, however, a cute, fluffy little vampire bunny who will suck all the juice (and color) right out of your vegetables. The Editor’s Note at the beginning of the book tells you that the manuscript for […]
