Bite Me

April 20, 2016 by expandingbookshelf 4 Comments

The Historian is like a cross between The Da Vinci Code and Dracula. It’s partially an update of Stoker’s classic tale, utilizing the scarier-than-fiction stories about Vlad “The Impaler” Tepes-the man upon whom Dracula’s legend is based. It’s also about a Robert Langdon-esque race to find priceless historical relics…before the bad guys get to them first. Throw in some father-daughter bonding, centuries-old secret societies waging quiet but brutal war and an old fashioned-love story, and you’ve got a pretty thick book. If that sounds intriguing, […]

Don’t go into the woods

April 15, 2016 by Malin 2 Comments

3.5 stars This is book four in an ongoing series. It is not the place to start. This review will contain mild spoilers for things that happened in previous books. If you are interested (I think the series is very entertaining and doing something different from most paranormal fantasy, I know others who strongly disagree), you should start with book one, Written in Red. Both the human and the supernatural inhabitants in the Lakeside courtyard are concerned about the further scheming of the Humans First […]

Nostalgia is a Powerful Thing

April 4, 2016 by melanir 4 Comments

Before Twilight, there was another overdramatic tale of love between a teenage girl and a vampire. I speak, of course, of The Vampire Diaries. And lo, the drama and angst is strong with this one. Lets get this out of the way first, this is not a good book however it is a super fun walk down memory lane for me, and so I’m a bit biased. It is extremely enjoyable, and much like the Sweet Valley High books, so long as you don’t expect anything from it the book […]

Call me sexist…..Okay. You are, Dresden. You’re a sexist.

March 25, 2016 by ingres77 6 Comments

The Dresden books are really good airport reads. I’m partial to genre fiction, so I read a lot more science fiction and fantasy than, say, James Patterson or John Grisham. But I think these books fall quite nicely into that quick, fun read section of the bookstore which is also inhabited by Michael Crichton, Dean Koontz, and other, similar, authors. There’s nothing revolutionary, or particularly meaningful here. Butcher isn’t exploring the existential quandary his characters, or delving some broader exploration of life in the early […]

What are we?………Werewolves, not Swearwolves.

March 3, 2016 by ingres77 12 Comments

Last year, I read the Old Man’s War series by John Scalzi, and struggled to put together reviews for the latter books. After awhile, there really isn’t much to say when every book in a series is as consistently good and enthralling as the ones that preceded it. So, with The Dresden Files (which I plan on reading in its entirety), I’m just going to throw a bunch of reviews into a few posts. Here are the first couple: Fool Moon (Book 2) – 4 […]

I listened but I didn’t learn.

February 25, 2016 by alwaysanswerb 5 Comments

I was warned that this one wasn’t that great, but in the spirit of getting back on the horse of reading monthy book club picks, I went ahead and read it anyway. I am not filled with righteous fury over this book, but I am very disappointed. The premise sounded pretty entertaining, an Ilona Andrews-lite set up of a young woman from a magical family whose own powers are mostly unknown and untested. She’s drawn into an investigation being overseen by a very powerful vampire […]
