Felix’s New Skirt by Kerstin Brichzin

May 7, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

There is another book you can check out if you are looking for a non-gender conforming book, Felix’s New Skirt. Felix is a boy. He likes skirts. He likes how it feels and how easy it is to move in them. He even borrows his sisters. But, of course, people in the neighborhood and his classmates do not accept it. It is not until Felix’s dad finds a solution that things start to work out for everyone. This for the reader who likes books about […]

The Little Guys by Vera Brosgol

April 3, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

People are going to just love The Little Guys by Vera Brosgol.  It is a message book with the message of teaching people not to be greedy and to learn how to be happy with what you have, but also how to be kind and share. There are cute and fun illustrations as you follow The Little Guys as they bully, take what is not theirs and be downright, all around, bad scoundrels. However, this story has been done before. There are no surprises. The […]

The not so naked truth

The Chinese Emperor’s New Clothes by Ying Chang Compestine

March 29, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I saw the cover dragon of The Chinese Emperor’s New Clothes peeking up off the cart, hidden behind several other titles, it was sitting on. I enjoy a good story from Asia (particularly if it is about Japan or Chinese New Year). I was hoping this was a Chinese New Year story, instead what I got was the “true story” of the Emperor’s New Clothes. I also like alternative tellings of stories we know and this was a delightful treat. Ying Chang Compestine’s story differs […]

Letters to a Prisoner by Jacques Goldstyn

March 27, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Letters to a Prisoner created by Jacques Goldstyn and Angela Keenlyside is a wordless picture book. Normally, I would not review this type of book, but something tells me that this might be the format to recommend it. First, I will say that I did not like this book. I appreciate the message (Amenity International Write for Rights campaign is a worthy cause) but the way it was presented, without a single piece of story text (although there is some text when letters are finally […]

Snubbed? Sure, but still a winning story

September 24, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

If I am reading my research correctly, Louise Erdrich’s The Birchback House was a 1999 National Book Award Finalist. I know this book was on my shelf for a long time, but I was saving it for the Snubbed category which is no shame as it went up against some AMAZING books. She went up against Kimberly Willis Holt (winner. Yay! LOVED the book/author), Laurie Halse Anderson’s Speak (OMG! What a book/author!), Polly Horvath (did not read Trolls but she is very good) and Walter […]
