“Crossing worlds, killing royals, saving cities. The marks of every good courtship.”

February 17, 2018 by slainte Leave a Comment

The Shades of Magic series continues to be a delight. A Gathering of Shadows picks up a few months after the end of A Darker Shade of Magic, with Lila maybe going down with a sinking lifeboat. “I am Delilah Bard, she thought, as the ropes cut into her skin. I am a thief and a pirate and a traveler. I have set foot in three different worlds, and lived. I have shed the blood of royals and held magic in my hands. A ship […]

Pirates, Magic, & Knife Wielding Bisexuals

January 24, 2018 by yesknopemaybe 1 Comment

4.5 stars. In general, I’m not someone who rereads books. There are just SO many good books out there waiting to be read that I have a hard time going back. Even if it was a book I liked, there’s always the fear that I might not like it as much the second time. I want to keep my memory of that book pristine. The problem is, instead of remembering plots and characters, I tend to remember how I felt about a book and that […]

Not the emotional wreckage I was told to expect

January 22, 2018 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I was good. I really was. I didn’t peek at any reviews or sneak a look at the last page or two. I really enjoyed the first two books of the series and I didn’t want to ruin this last one. I did see some comments on social media from people who had read the book before me, and all of them were pretty similar. Everyone I’ve seen who posted about A Conjuring of Light on Twitter, Goodreads, etc. said something along the lines of […]

Who is the hero, who is the villain?

January 3, 2018 by Dome'Loki 3 Comments

In 2015 I was introduced to V.E. Schwab through her book A Darker Shade of Magic, which I devoured and then a year later was pleasantly surprised to find out it was the start of a trilogy.  Each time I chatted with the booksellers at my favorite bookstore and ADSoM came up they always asked if I had read Vicious.  I kept admitting that I hadn’t and they would always chime back about how good it is.  This year for our family holiday book exchange I […]

A good sort of series ender.

December 6, 2017 by narfna 2 Comments

I wish I would have written this review right after I finished the book. (I should get that printed on a t-shirt.) I finished it a couple of months ago now, and as always seems to happen to me when I do this, I put off writing the review in the (vain) hopes that time will make me smarter (or something?) and words will magically appear in the review space. This never happens. Instead, I am left trying to remember what happened in the book and […]

This series continues to be fun but not perfect.

Cliffhanger nooooooooo. Except I really can’t complain, because 1) I have the next book sitting on my nightstand and I can pick it up whenever I want (which will be after I finish the next two books on my TBR); and 2) It was a really well done cliffhanger! Just the right amount of “I need to find out what will happen next” and “I’m pretty sure I know what’s coming next and it’s going to be great.” I’ve seen several people note in their […]
