Creepy Girl Stan Club

The Fragile Threads of Power by V.E. Schwab

October 24, 2024 by LittlePlat Leave a Comment

I’m a bit of mixed fan of the Shades of Magic. I love the world that was developed with it, and I love the way it treats magic. I am also a fan of the way the author V.E. Schwab writes—for the most part.  What I was not always a huge fan of was some of the characters, who who had a tendency to rub me the wrong way. I very much liked Kell from the original trilogy and I loved the main antagonist. But […]

Be Careful What You Wish For

The Invisible Life of Addie Laroux by V.E. Schwab

September 21, 2024 by genericwhitegirl Leave a Comment

Addie Laroux was born in the 1690’s in France. Paradoxically, her very normal life led her to the most abnormal of circumstances. Facing the shackles of marriage and domestic county life, Addie ran into the woods and prayed for her freedom. In her haste, she appealed to whichever god would listen. But in her desperation, she also prayed after the sun went down, and forgot a warning to never pray to the gods who answer after dark. And it was Luc who answered. Make no […]

Returning to Old Friends and Meeting New Ones

The Fragile Threads of Power by V. E. Schwab

September 12, 2024 by Tracy Leave a Comment

This felt more like the 4th book in the Shades of Magic trilogy than the start of a new series, which is not a complaint. We are given the opportunity to revisit the lives of Kell, Lila, Rhy, and Alucard. The novel is set 7 years after the first trilogy, and Schwab uses flashbacks to fill readers in on what these characters have been doing, which takes up a large chunk of the book. They have evolved in various ways, and I particularly enjoyed seeing […]

Shades of Magic Trilogy – and My First BINGO

A Darker Shade of Magic by V. E. Schwab

A Gathering of Shadows by V. E. Schwab

A Conjuring of Light by V. E. Schwab

August 7, 2024 by Tracy Leave a Comment

A Darker Shade of Magic I knew I would eventually want to pick up another V. E. Schwab book after finishing The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, and I’m glad that I selected A Darker Shade of Magic to continue my Schwab reading journey because I really enjoyed it. It’s set in a 4 parallel worlds, all of which somehow have a London essentially in the same place in each of those worlds. Grey London (from the era of George III) has no magic. Red […]

Trigger happy

Vengeful: A Novel (Villains Book 2) by V.E. Schwab

July 12, 2024 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

Cbr16bingo Part 2 Part 2 of VE Schwab’s Villains series, Vengeful, picks up 5 years after the events of book 1, Vicious. As with the previous volume, the story line cuts back and forth from present day to the past, slowly teasing out the events that have formed the main characters and that are leading up to what promises to be an explosive showdown between factions of EOs (ExtraOrdinaries, i.e. those with super powers) and civilian authority, most notably the new and secret task force […]

This one goes to a pretty dark place

Vicious: A Novel (Villains Book 1) by V.E. Schwab

July 10, 2024 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

Cbr16bingo Part 1 This is the second novel I’ve read recently that deals with heroes and villains, and with the notion that “heroes” are actually pretty terrible people. Hench was a great read, and I was immediately sucked in to Vicious, too. In both stories, the “bad guys” actually are the people who seem to have a better sense of what is the right thing to do, but they still aren’t completely good people. This is a pretty dark novel and absolutely not for the […]
