Evil Stone of DOOOOOOOM

April 7, 2017 by melanir Leave a Comment

I am finding myself feeling rather lackluster about this book. I liked it, it was fine if predictable, but I think I was expecting a lot more and it’s just not there. This is going to be one of those reviews that sounds a lot more negative than I actually feel about the book. I did like it, I’m going to read the next books, but I can’t work up to the level of excitement that I feel has surrounded the book. The premise of […]

Magical deliciousness

April 6, 2017 by kella Leave a Comment

I received this book for Christmas from my mom; she went to the local bookstore and just happened to pick something that I would love without me providing a detailed list of titles and authors.  A Christmas miracle! 🙂 In this book, our magical hero Kell lives in London at a time where different worlds are layered on top of each other. The geography of each London is the same, but everything else is drastically different (including the magical abilities of the residents).  He is only […]

A darker shade of yes, please.

March 18, 2017 by narfna Leave a Comment

Parallel universes are categorically THE BEST, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen them done quite like they are here in A Darker Shade of Magic, the first book in Victoria Schwab’s* Shades of Magic series, which just published its third and final book last week. *She writes YA under her real name, and adult fiction under her pseudonym V.E. Schwab. I’m late to the party, especially given how much I love fantasy and parallel universes, but I don’t really care because I now own […]

So you wanna play with magic?

February 10, 2017 by TylerDFC 6 Comments

This dark fantasy is Game of Thrones meets The Night Circus and will appeal to any fans of realistic fantasy. The first book of a three part trilogy (part 3 releases February 2017), A Darker Shade of Magic is an outstanding novel that will enthrall readers and insure you are up late reading “just one more page.” There is not one London, but four. There is the world of Henry III, a Grey London without magic. There is Red London, where magic is in balance. […]

A Good Kind of Vicious

December 24, 2016 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

I really liked A Darker Shade of Magic and A Gathering of Shadows, so I had high expectations for Vicious. I was not disappointed. There is a lot of shifting between perspectives and timelines, but it’s all handled pretty well. There are 2 timelines: now and 10 years ago (both give or take a few days/hours). 10 years ago follows college students Victor and Eli who are both brilliant and very different, yet friends and roommates. They have to do senior thesis projects and Eli […]

Schwab is killin’ it

May 22, 2016 by yesknopemaybe 1 Comment

4.5 stars. I’m a little mad that I got sucked into a book with a cliffhanger ending and who knows when the next book will be out, but at least it was an incredibly fun reading experience. I’ve got to try Schwab’s other books. If they’re as readable as this series, I know I’ll love them. Anyway, back to A Gathering of Shadows. The story starts off about 4 months after the end of A Darker Shade of Magic. Lila’s been out adventuring, meeting great […]
