Ah, the Art of Clumsily Remaking a Classic

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: High School is Hell (Vol. 1) by Jordie Bellaire

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Once Bitten (Vol. 2) by Jordie Bellaire

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Hellmouth (Vol. 3) by Jordie Bellaire

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Ring of Fire (Vol. 4) by Jordie Bellaire

Okay, so let me explain what’s going on here real quick, because the comic doesn’t actually do a particularly good job of it: it’s adapting Buffy into the current modern day, rather than the modern day at the time that it aired.  So: pushing the story forward by about 20 years. And seeing what still works, what changes, and what snaps under the pressure.  It’s an interesting idea. It’s not so far of a time-displacement that it makes everything different (which […]

Something of a Letdown But Compelling Enough That I’m Still Reading This Series

Things are not going well for Ember and the Wild Hunt at the moment.  Their last case went more than a little sideways, one of Herne’s ex’s showed up with the news that he’s a father, and there’s an existential threat to the Fae.  Their newest case is locating the missing fiancé of an ante-fae, and Ember does her best to focus on that.  But it feels like everything is coming apart at the moment, and Ember has to wonder what the future really holds […]

When some sort of plague starts affecting both the Light and Dark Fae courts, the Wild Hunt is called in to investigate.  Ember is a little distracted though as she’s dealing with her new house which seems to have unwelcome guests of the ghostly sort as well as her father’s family showing up.  But when it becomes clear that this disease may be an attempt to completely destroy the Fae, the stakes are higher than they’ve ever been before. So this book was really interesting, […]

Good mystery, aggravating characters

The Saints of the Lost and Found by T.M. Causey

If you were a former watcher of Lost, or are a current watcher of From, or any of the dozens of mystery type shows where the show would be over if two or three characters just TALKED to each other and answered a damn question every once in a while, this book might drive you up the wall. The mystery part of the story was good, and the concept is cool, but holy hell I wanted to shake at least three or four of the […]

“Small talk with the dragon. How are you? Eaten any adventurers lately? Sure, just had one this morning. Look, I still got his femur stuck in my teeth. Is that upsetting to you?”

Well, everyone was right. This was great, and the marketing/art department at Avon should be shamed heavily for the way they did this book and this entire series dirty*. I imagine there are many, many readers who would enjoy this book, and presumably the rest of the series, if the covers weren’t a) heinously misrepresenting the contents of the story, and b) butt ugly and embarrassing. I was one of those readers! And then people whose tastes I trust kept pushing them on me until […]
