I wanted to like this book, and there were moments of it that I enjoyed, but the sixty or so pages in between these precious paragraphs were enough for me to not recommend this book to any serious urban fantasy readers. The bones of a good story are there: a fairly congenial and funny protagonist, a supernatural world, a believable love interest, and a manageable cast of semi-interesting major characters. Where this book failed to capture my attention was in the protagonist’s narration and the […]
We’re All A Little Richard Mayhew
This is my third Gaiman book, and I am continually impressed by Gaiman’s ability to break down every trope of the genre and rebuild it in a way that both continues to be fantastical but also makes it accessible. “Neverwhere” is a dark, dangerous, high stakes journey that in the hands of any other fantasy writer would need a main character of power, or at least someone with an attribute that sets them apart. But Gaiman chooses to tell his story through someone so average, […]

A magical flare brings ancient gods to Atlanta
Thanks to the high praise from my book club, I decided to take on the next Kate Daniels book: Magic Burns. Instead of a tale of personal vengeance, we follow Kate as she works a missing person case for a young girl named Julie. The girl’s mom is a witch and has gone missing after a mysterious spell with her circle. The helpless and malnourished kid only help is her boyfriend, a young wannabe shaman kid from the street named Red. Red did a favor for Kate in the […]
Kate Daniels: Magical Mercenary with Vengeance on Her Mind

To survive, one must know when to use their car and when to hire that horse to get across town to that meeting. With magic in full swing for years, all sorts of creatures have come out of […]
