In which I haphazardly scatter a bunch of feels to the wind

February 23, 2015 by alwaysanswerb Leave a Comment

I’m afraid I’m not going to be very succinct here. My love for the Fever series has been documented in Cannonballs past, as well as my skepticism about the direction taken of the last book. I’m not going to spoil Burned in this review, but I’ll be talking about trends and events throughout the previous books so consider yourself warned on that score. Here’s one thing right off the bat I feel like I should mention: sometimes that even in 4- or 5- star reviews (so, books I […]

Fire spider: IGNITE!!!

February 18, 2015 by narfna 6 Comments

Sometimes you go into a book with expectations, and the book blows those expectations all to hell. The first two books in the Magic Ex Libris series were fun, pulpy romps through the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (and through the annals of great fantasy and sci-fi literature). We followed librarian cum libriomancer, Isaac Vainio, a man who can use magic to pull things out of books, as he fought off all mess of troubles. As a member of the Porters, a secret society of magic […]

This is a situation for mindless violence and brute force. First good news I’ve had all day

Sandman Slim by Richard Kadrey

February 2, 2015 by Emmalita 4 Comments

James Stark returns to LA after 11 years in Hell with a mission of vengeance.  The first thing he does is mug a rich coke head, steal his clothes, taser and wallet.  Stark, known to the denizens of Hell as Sandman Slim, the monster other monsters are afraid of, is a classic anti-hero.  He’s sarcastic, not nice, self destructive and he’s hard to kill.  Sandman Slim is sarcastic, not nice, manic, and darkly funny.  My first encounter with Sandman Slim was hearing an audio clip […]

When Gods Reincarnate as Teen Pop Stars, Things Get A Little Crazy

January 28, 2015 by AmySaysREAD Leave a Comment

Over on my blog today, I’ve got my review of the ridiculously awesome graphic novel The Wicked + The Divine. If you like world deities and mythologies, this book has a lot to delight you. It also features a kick ass woman of color as narrator and a wickedly awesome lady Lucifer.

Mind The Gap

January 17, 2015 by Jenny S 2 Comments

In the third installment of Ben Aaronovitch’s series about magic, supernatural beings, and a special police squad in London, Aaronovitch does the Whedon/Buffy thing. There’s a “Monster of the month” plot for our hero, Peter Grant, involving a murdered American, unbreakable ceramics, a female FBI agent, and, as you might have guessed, the London Underground system. At the same time, Peter and his fellow officer and friend, Lesley, and his mentor, Inspector Nightingale, are trying to hunt down a rogue wizard known only as the […]

I’m verbose when I hate something.

January 14, 2015 by Amanda 22 Comments

Let’s start this off honestly.  I only picked up this book because I’m trying to be less of a snob.  Both about this type of fantasy (urban pop romance, I would call it) and about authors who are as prolific as Ms. Day (the first three books of this series were published in the same year).  Eve of Darkness did nothing to dispel my disdain for this type of novel because Eve of Darkness is terrible on many, many levels.  Basically all of them that […]
