Ignore the cover, read the book

March 29, 2015 by Emmalita 5 Comments

Sometimes I’m reluctant to start a book because I know once I start, I won’t stop until I’m done. I’ve been holding off on Burn for Me for that reason. I was right. I could not put it down. I was in the middle of reviewing the 4th Sandman Slim novel when I started reading Burn for Me. GAH! Two quibbles. One – the cover is awful. I couldn’t bear to post it. Ignore it and read the book. Two – I hate the intro […]

Page count: 512, time taken: 4 hours   Driven by visions, Meg Corbyn flees her captors and ends up stumbling into a job as a Human Liaison in an Others enclave in Lakeside. She quickly finds acceptance from the shape-shifting inhabitants, except from Simon Wolfgard, leader of the Courtyard, and his father. Fortunately, Meg manages to help Simon’s nephew through the worst of his severe PTSD, and Simon quickly becomes a fan. Which is useful when Meg’s past catches up to her.   Good things about […]

Czech Gypsy Porn Star Zombie Killer, Drifters and Thieves

March 25, 2015 by Emmalita 6 Comments

Kill the Dead is the second in the Sandman Slim series. If you like urban fantasy, noir, mysteries, or really well written books you should be reading the Sandman Slim books. Let me repeat this:  You should be reading Sandman Slim! I am listening, audio style, while I pack up a friend’s house. McLeod Andrews is an amazing reader. Listening to James Stark (aka Jim, Jimmy, Sandman Slim the monster who kills monsters, or Abomination) drink, smoke, steal cars and serve up shit to people […]

Fear Kate Daniels. She is a mighty and terrible ruler.

March 20, 2015 by Emmalita 6 Comments

After I read Magic Bleeds, I started thinking about the most recent book – Magic Breaks. Like Magic Bleeds, Magic Breaks is a major pivot point for the series. However, I haven’t read Magic Breaks often enough to have “deep” thoughts about it, so this is just a book review not me talking out my butt about the importance of pop culture.  If you haven’t read the Kate Daniels series – you should go read the books and then read this review.  This review is […]

Fingernails definitely turning blue

March 16, 2015 by Lizbth 3 Comments

Page count 448, time taken 3.5hours, number of blue nails 3*. Tana is a big damn goth who finds herself in the wrong party at the wrong time. Several times. I think she might be cursed. She finds herself travelling to Coldtown in the company of a vampire and her infected ex-boyfriend, and quarantines herself with them. She meets a bunch of other big damn goths, some of whom are more terrible than others, and makes friends. She also makes questionable decisions about the security […]

Mindbending

March 3, 2015 by alwaysanswerb Leave a Comment

So I finally read Alif the Unseen. Wow — what a genre-bender. So many questions about belief, ideology, loyalty, technology, humanity, and identity are explored across multiple metaphysical planes and in achingly familiar real-world contexts. To back up to a plot summary, which I’ll ape from Goodreads: “In an unnamed Middle Eastern security state, a young Arab-Indian hacker shields his clients—dissidents, outlaws, Islamists, and other watched groups—from surveillance and tries to stay out of trouble. He goes by Alif—the first letter of the Arabic alphabet, and […]
