Awooo! Werewolves of Baltimore!

January 1, 2016 by DataAngel 1 Comment

I love me some werewolves. I love me some Baltimore. I love me some gay romance.  You’d think I’d love me this book. Sadly, I did not.  This book unfortunately pushes a lot of my “nope” buttons, but I do understand that there are a lot of people out there for whom this book will be catnip. Erm. Whatever the werewolf version of catnip is. It starts with a sex scene. Two cops, partners Logan and Dylan, are getting hot and heavy in their off-hours. One […]

A must read for urban fantasy fans

October 27, 2015 by yesknopemaybe 1 Comment

I enjoyed Older’s Half-Resurrection Blues, but adored Shadowshaper. He really brought a magical alternative Brooklyn to life with this tale. Sierra Santiago is a normal teenager excited for her summer break. She’s going to hang out with friends and spend her time painting murals around the city, until a creepy guy crashes the first party of the season and ends up chasing her. Combined with some weird occurrences like a mural weeping and her incapacitated abuelo repeating the same phrase over and over, she knows […]

Killing Pretty by Richard Kadrey

September 22, 2015 by Emmalita 6 Comments

Happy birthday to me. Happy birthday to me. Happy birthday tooo meeeee. I got me some Richard Kadrey! As I demonstrated back in March and April, I love Richard Kadrey’s Sandman Slim series. Killing Pretty was released a few weeks ago, but at a higher price point than my budget will tolerate, so I decided to save it for my birthday. And yes, I woke up this morning at 6:30, bought it and began listening to the audio narration. Now I’ve written an off the […]

Good Plot, Good Characters, Great Setting

August 9, 2015 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

Hey look, it’s an urban fantasy that actually takes place in a realistic urban setting. There are people of many ethnicities and the city has pockets of different cultures. These writing choices by Daniel José Older really lend the fantastical elements a heavy dose of realism. It’s refreshing. That realistic setting and Older’s imaginative world building made Half-Resurrection Blues a very enjoyable read. Carlos Delacruz isn’t really alive, but he’s not quite dead either. He’s an inbetweener, someone who lives between the world of the […]

Does a mix of The Matrix and Supernatural sound interesting to you? If so, maybe you should write that book better than this one.

Have you ever started a review of a book you rated three stars (as I did) thinking “Meh,” but by the end realized you spent most of the review trashing the book and wondered if you shouldn’t downgrade your official rating? Come with me as I overthink Darkness Brutal, a book I picked up because I was determined to get something out of my Kindle Unlimited trial, and I noticed that this book with an incredibly silly title actually had pretty good reviews. Here’s the […]
