It’s a Hard Knock Life

March 20, 2017 by Lipton 2 Comments

In the criminal justice system, magical crimes are considered especially bizarre. In London, the detectives who investigate these crimes are increasingly beset by dangers both mundane and otherworldly. These are their stories. Dun DUN.

A darker shade of yes, please.

Parallel universes are categorically THE BEST, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen them done quite like they are here in A Darker Shade of Magic, the first book in Victoria Schwab’s* Shades of Magic series, which just published its third and final book last week. *She writes YA under her real name, and adult fiction under her pseudonym V.E. Schwab. I’m late to the party, especially given how much I love fantasy and parallel universes, but I don’t really care because I now own […]

“I shield in the name of fashion. I accessorize for one and all. Pursuit of truth is my passion. This I vow by the great parasol.”

I am very late to the Parasol Protectorate party, which Gail Carriger threw from approximately 2009-2012, and celebrated the publication of a 5-book steampunk/urban fantasy series. Now that I have finally read the series, it’s evident that the fanfare is deserved. Carriger has a voice that is unique of her contemporaries, and while I consider all of my very favorite historical romance/fantasy books to have some measure of wit and humor, these books are on another level. If Wodehouse decided to dabble in the territory […]

Carnivals, Monsters, and Magic- Oh My

March 13, 2017 by melanir 3 Comments

I got a surprise when I opened my Kindle on Friday. See, the email I use for Amazon was being annoying on my phone, so I wasn’t getting emails and I frequently forget the release dates for books. When I opened my Kindle and saw the cover of Magic for Nothing staring out at me, ready for my reading pleasure, I died of happiness. It was the best. Magic for Nothing is book six in Seanan McGuire’s Incryptid series, and is really not the place […]

Had to Go Back and Reread Parts Due to Awesome Reveal!

March 8, 2017 by Classic 2 Comments

Well I’ll be honest. The main reason why this book is five stars for me is because of the awesome awesome reveal that we get about a character that I was ultimately dismissive of while reading. I ended up having to go back and reread parts of the book though after that reveal and just chuckle to myself. I think long-time readers are going to love it, no spoilers. Until that reveal I was probably firmly in the four-star range territory just because we have […]

I miss when I cared deeply about this series

March 6, 2017 by alwaysanswerb Leave a Comment

This review will probably not be coherent to anyone except those familiar with this series, and maybe not even then. There will be spoilers. And conflicting feelings. The shortest version of my history with the Fever series is that I instantly fell in love with the first five books, reading them all in succession over the course of a weekend. I had Fever fever. I’ve read those original five several times since then. When I learned that Karen Marie Moning planned to continue the series, […]
