Finally a break in a streak of not great

strange practice by vivian shaw

May 19, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

Yeah for finding a new fun series! It’s fairly light, not perfect but quite promising. The basic premise is that Dr. Greta Helsing (daughter of that Helsing; yes, the one you’re probably thinking of) is a doctor for things that go bump in the night, like ghouls, vampires, vampyres, mummies, etc. She’s friends with Edmund Ruthven (yes, that Lord Ruthven), and as a result of a bad thing going on in the monster community, gets together a group including Ruthven, Francis Varney (a vampyr which […]

Wow. Not in a Good Way.

Storm Cursed by Patricia Briggs

So. I initially was just going to give this three stars and move along. However, after thinking it through this morning, this book honestly doesn’t deserve 3 stars (okay). This book’s pacing was off, there was about zero character development, too much repetition, and I think at one point I even said to myself that this book was just filler. It’s a book to bridge to the next Alpha/Omega book or the next Mercy Thompson. The book synopsis on this one sounded so bad ass […]

Not quite measuring up to expectations

Clean Sweep (Innkeeper Chronicles #1) by Ilona Andrews

May 2, 2019 by TheShitWizard 5 Comments

I actually read this a few weeks ago, but since then I’ve found myself so consumed by Game of Thrones that I’ve neglected pretty much everything else in my life. Let’s get caught up, shall we? In the midst of some heavy duty non-fiction reading, I found myself jonesing for some nice and easy brain candy, so when Clean Sweep came up on offer on my kindle, I jumped at it. I’ve already read and enjoyed two Ilona Andrews series (Kate Daniels and Hidden Legacy), […]

Loving the IAD Series Reread

No Rest for the Wicked by Kresley Cole

April 17, 2019 by Alexis 2 Comments

The Immortals After Dark series was part of my onramp to romance that I read mumbles incoherently years ago. They aren’t perfect but they are fun although they haven’t been generally well received by some Cannonballers due to various issues including a tendency to feature ThunderSex™ . I mostly forgot about them before stumbling across Fated Mates, the delightful podcast by romance writer Sarah MacLean and romance critic Jen Prokop THAT I CANNOT RECOMMEND HIGHLY ENOUGH. (While the emphasis of the podcast is the IAD […]

Good Smolder and Original Urban Fantasy

Rhapsodic by Laura Thalassa

April 1, 2019 by Alexis 2 Comments

My strategy for surviving the Trump presidency is to hide exclusively in fun escapist books and Rhapsodic, involving a fey king and a human siren, fit the bill. Callypso is a siren who can use her voice to compel humans to do/say whatever she wants, a power she utilizes to coerce bad people to admit their crimes, stop stealing from the innocent, etc. When she was younger she bought favors from the Bargainer, a dark fey. Not just a few favors, HUNDREDS OF FAVORS. She […]

The telepathic dog is still the best part.

Hexed (The Iron Druid Chronicles, #2) by Kevin Hearne

March 18, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

I bought the first six books of this series several years ago in paperback, but I wish I hadn’t. I think if I read this by audio instead of hard copy, I would have enjoyed it more. (I really enjoyed my audio re-read of the first book a couple of months ago. Luke Daniels is one of my favorite narrators.) But I feel like it would be wasting all that money I spent, so I’m committed to do hard copies at least through book six. […]
