Thank you, Bothari43, for helping me complete my first bingo of 2021!

Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews

August 31, 2021 by Dome'Loki 4 Comments

CBR 13 Bingo Square: FREE – It’s taken a while for me to get around to it but I have finally read Magic Bites, a  Cannonball Book Exchange from Bothari43!  Visit link for bonus Wall-E content. When I posted my thank you, Emmalita and Malin were quick to jump in and warn me that this is not Ilona Andrews best book but if I could stick around, book three is excellent.  This was reinforced by other Cannonballers during one of the zoom chats earlier this year.  I […]

“So, I mean, it’s awesome that, uh, you’re a city? Congratulations! I want to be accepting of this new stage in your identity formation.”

The City We Became by N.K. Jemisin

August 26, 2021 by cheerbrarian 2 Comments

I want to try something new with my reviews. Yeah, I could start again with OH WOW. HOW DID I GET SO BEHIND. AGAIN. But snooze, amiright? Instead, I want to use the system that my local library book club does. We always go around the room and give a rating (check, already part of Cannonball and Goodreads) and then sum up our feelings on the book in one word. I’m going to let you know now, I’m a bit of a cheat and I […]

A black and white cat sitting next to the book Heroine Worship by Sarah Kuhn

More superheroine action and romance!

Heroine Worship by Sarah Kuhn

August 15, 2021 by Dome'Loki 2 Comments

CBR 13 Bingo: Rec’d – I’m reading this series because of teresaelectro’s recommendation! Heroine Worship is the second book in Sarah Kuhn’s “Heroine Complex” series.  In the first volume, Heroine Complex  Evie Tanaka is a restrained, quiet assistant and best friend of super heroine, Aveda Jupiter, with a secret, she’s been hiding her own fire superpower.  This time around, Aveda is the narrator and the story picks up about three months after the events in the first novel.  It is discovered that a minor demon is […]

“That had been a little more than forty years past. Fatma was born into the world al-Jahiz left behind: a world transformed by magic and the supernatural.”

A Dead Djinn in Cairo (Dead Djinn Universe, #0.5) by P. Djèlí Clark

July 5, 2021 by narfna 4 Comments

The highlight of this short story is definitely the world-building. I was immediately intrigued by the way Clark wrote about his alternate-history Cairo in 1912, populated with djinn and angels and steampunk machinery, and refreshingly devoid of colonialism. This takes place in a Cairo about fifty years after a curious man opened up a gateway through which djinn and other supernatural creatures, along with magic, entered the world. Egypt has become a world superpower, as the djinn helped them to kick the British out of […]

Peace Talks by Jim Butcher

Battle Ground by Jim Butcher

June 3, 2021 by thewheelbarrow 1 Comment

Let’s be honest, if you are reading this review then you are probably a big fan of the Dresden Files already. These are books 16 and 17 in the series after all.  It had been a while since we last saw Harry and the gang and I was really happy with his return. I first started the Dresden Files back in 2012 or 13 and read books 1-10 in an obscenely short amount of time, like a month. I was deployed and very bored at […]

Cannonballing to the end of the world with Sandman Slim

King Bullet by Richard Kadrey

June 2, 2021 by Emmalita 8 Comments

King Bullet, the last book in the Sandman Slim series, is a pandemic baby, and you know it. It is steeped in isolation, anxiety, and the futile desire for simple answers in the face of complex problems. And it’s James Stark, so there’s violence, mayhem, hidden Hollywood, and heavenly hosts. James Stark was sent to hell alive by his magician friends who were jealous of his powers. While there, he became Sandman Slim, the monster who kills monsters. Stark escaped from Hell to wreak vengeance […]
