“I can’t give you the white picket fence, and if I did, you’d set it on fire.”

Magic Bleeds (Kate Daniels, #4) by Ilona Andrews

April 27, 2022 by narfna 4 Comments

The conflict in this one had some serious stakes, and the bad guys were seriously creepy/scary. The authors pair that really well with the relationship conflict Curran and Kate are having. This is probably the most action-packed of the books so far (and *action* packed, cough wink). The book opens with Kate being stood up on her first date with Curran. She doesn’t take it well and things go downhill from there. A standard call for help to a bar outside town turns into a […]

A small, calico cat lying down with her legs tucked underneath behind a cell phone showing a picture of the audio book "Brief Cases" by Jim Butcher

Overall good but appreciated the stories by characters that aren’t Harry Dresden in particular.

Brief Cases by Jim Butcher

Last year I listened to the first Dresden Files short story collection, Side Jobs, to be able to listen to the excellent narration by James Marsters (on the recommendation of ardaigle!).  Marsters is a great narrator but he fell short when it came time for Karrin Murphy’s story at the end of the book.  For the next collection of short stories, Brief Cases, they brought on two female narrators, Cassandra Campbell and Julia Whelan for stories from Anastasia Luccio and Molly Carpenter’s POV.  No disrespect to […]

My conflicted thoughts about SJM continue to be conflicted.

House of Earth and Blood (Crescent City, #1) by Sarah J. Maas

March 29, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

I’ve gotta say, this is related and unrelated to this book, I’ve been seeing quite a few status updates on Goodreads (the vast majority from people I don’t follow) expressing pretty negative and dismissive opinions about romance and people who read romance that seem borderline misogynistic to me. There’s an attitude there that because they don’t read romance or fantasy romance (or whatever romance) they are better, smarter, more elevated than those who do. This is bullshit, and it is unkind. I would highly suggest […]

I Am in Actual Awe

House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J Maas

February 13, 2022 by Pooja 7 Comments

Bryce Quinlan lives a charmed life in Crescent City, despite her dubious status as a half-human citizen of the Empire. But all that changes when her best friend is murdered viciously. Now, two years later, she discovers that most everything she believed about that murder may be a lie. I will go on record about this; I am eating my words. A few years ago, on the recommendation of my sister, I started reading the Throne of Glass series. I thought the first book was […]

“I dreamed that Curran and I killed a dinosaur and then had sex in the dirt.”

Magic Strikes (Kate Daniels, #3) by Ilona Andrews

February 2, 2022 by narfna 8 Comments

All right, I get why people love this series! I wish I had put book four on my February TBR instead of March. Oh, well. Even despite playing around with the commonly used “underground gladiator/fighting ring” plot structure, this book was a really good time. It helps when you take a commonly used plot device and use it well, which they did! I’m not even going to try and explain what’s going on with the plot. It’s a lot, and it’s too involved with spoilery […]

“The clan is my blood and the Pillar it’s master. On my honour, on my life, on my jade”

Jade City by Fonda Lee

Jade War by Fonda Lee

Jade Legacy by Fonda Lee

Wow Have you ever read through a new series that was so good, so engrossing, that you feel like you’re waking up the night after downing a six-pack? Like, you literally have a reading hangover? This is me with Fonda Lee’s Green Bone Saga. I don’t understand how this series managed to miss me personally; my first introduction was to the series was very late last year, around the release of the third book. Which turned out to be very very convenient for me, […]
