“They never see you coming, do they?”

July 6, 2015 by TylerDFC Leave a Comment

Bob and Cousin Marv run a bar on the south side of Boston. Despite being called “Cousin Marv’s” it’s actually owned by the local Chechen gangsters. Because of this it’s used as a secure drop point for various bookmaking money in town so that the gangsters can collect it later. One night a couple of robbers stick up the bar for $5000 and the Chechens do not react well to this event. Bob inadvertently complicates the matter by giving the investigating cop, Detective Torres, a […]

Raylan Givens, Karen Sisco, and assorted creeps, criminals, and ne’er-do-wells

Nine short stories make up the Fire in the Hole collection (previously called The Women Come out to Dance) and are a great introduction to Elmore Leonard’s easy style of writing and terrific dialogue. I’m just starting to get in to his books, this would be the 4th I’ve read, and so far I’m enjoying the hell out of them. The main draw of Fire in the Hole is the title story. Fans of the FX series Justifed know this is the story that provides […]

The bloody alt-history begun in “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” continues…

June 29, 2015 by TylerDFC Leave a Comment

The best way to describe The Last American Vampire is “Forrest Gump with vampires”. Picking up where Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter ended, this new book changes focus to Henry Sturges and we see much more of his life before Abe came on the scene. The alternative history set up in the first book continues here. To briefly recap, vampires are real and have been shaping history for centuries. The American Civil War was fueled by vampires trying to secure a never ending source of food […]

Part coming of age story and part sword and sorcery adventure story, The Name of the Wind is a masters class in fantasy world building that unfortunately gets bogged down when the action switches to a University setting. Kote spends his days running the inn on the side of a road in a tiny town. Dark days have descended on the land. Black spider like demons terrorize the populace, raiders are common on the roads, and whispers of an ancient evil are becoming louder. One […]

The Fables series finale begins

June 11, 2015 by TylerDFC Leave a Comment

After finishing Camelot, I started wondering about the seeds Willingham was planting that point toward very bad things happening to Fabletown and the Farm where our various heroes and anti-heroes make their homes. The series has had a couple of board-clearing events in the past but this one felt different. Turns out I was right. Last year, Willingham announced he was ending both Fables and the spinoff, Fairest, this summer. Specifically the last issue will come out July 22, 2015 and be 150 pages long. […]

Historical footnote brought vividly to life by a master of non-fiction writing

May 19, 2015 by TylerDFC Leave a Comment

Erik Larson (Devil in the White City and Thunderstruck to name a few) writes non-fiction that reads like a novel, enthralling the reader and keeping them up page-turning with the same intensity as a beach read thriller. Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania is no exception. History tells us on May 7 1915 a German submarine attacked and sank the British cruise liner, RMS Lusitania, on a voyage from New York City to Liverpool with several hundred American citizens on board. This act […]
