Elmore Leonard doesn’t write mysteries, not really. The reader knows what is going on ahead of all the characters. The fun is in watching the characters learn the truth, seeing how they work it out in their heads, and then what they do with that information. The criminals are mostly dipshits. Charismatic and colorful, but still largely dipshits. It’s been a year since the events of Pronto and this time Deputy US Marshall Raylan Givens is trying to locate the recently kidnapped Harry Arno. Raylan […]

A very funny caper comedy where the caper comes second
Pel Dalton spends his time by day as a supervisor of IT staff at a library, er, make that Learning Center, at a large University in England. By night he squabbles incessantly with this German girlfriend, Ursula, and tries to raise the couple’s 2 young boys. Pel does just enough to get by and believes half-assing any task is about a quarter ass too much. He’s mostly been bluffing his way through his job so when Pel’s boss, TSR, suddenly vanishes and Pel steps in […]
In the future all of our conversations will be in 80’s movie quotes
Armada is a summer blockbuster in book form. It’s entertaining, it moves fast, and it’s a fun ride. It’s also not nearly as smart as it thinks it is. Armada walks the line between “homage” and “rip off” on a razor wire. To be honest I’m still not sure which side it ultimately falls on but I’m leaning strongly toward rip off. Aliens are invading Earth and only a group of clandestinely trained gamers can save us. Sound familiar? The X-Files tells us “The truth […]
Where lies the strangling fruit that came from the hand of the sinner I shall bring forth the seeds of the dead…
Southern Reach Trilogy is a smart and scary science fiction story that offers literate thrills for those willing to stick through it. The trilogy is LOST crossed with an apocalyptic Lovecraft scenario. It’s an ecological disaster story at heart but spends considerable amount of time examining the people and things that are exposed to the mysterious Area X and detailing the effects it has on them. Note: I read the 3 volumes that make up the Southern Reach trilogy separately. The Amazon link is for […]
The Crow Flies Straight
In the introduction to Sons of Anarchy: The Official Collector’s Edition, creator and show runner Kurt Sutter jokes that the book was originally over 6,000 pages and what is left is everything that cleared Fox censors. I’m not sure if there is any truth to that but while the book is pretty comprehensive it’s not the end-all-be-all inclusive book about the critically acclaimed television series that I had hoped it would be. It’s good, but there is a lot of missing pieces that if included […]
