So, this series apparently got a lot of hype when the first book, The Passage, first came out. I was, presumably, living under a rock at the time, and so hadn’t heard of it. In fact, I didn’t really hear about the series until the final book came out, at which point I decided to read them all. And, well, the first half of the first book was great, the second half was good. The second book was okay, verging on bad and the third book was […]
Satisfying end to the series
This is the third book in Stephen King’s Bill Hodges trilogy, so if you haven’t read the prior two I would skip this review to avoid spoilers. Full disclosure, I am a huge King fan, and while I wouldn’t say I have a bias when it comes to his stuff (he has certainly written things I haven’t enjoyed) I am naturally inclined to like his work. End of Days brings the Bill Hodges trilogy to its completion, starting with Mr. Mercedes and then […]
A perfectly serviceable start to a YA trilogy.
A plague has killed 98% of the world’s population. Eve is preparing for her graduation ceremony from her all-girls school in the middle of nowhere, after which she’ll cross a bridge and begin learning a trade, when she discovers that her teachers haven’t been totally forthcoming with her about the world she lives in or what’s across the bridge. Things I liked a lot about this book: So far there’s not too much of the Chosen One trope, which is a huge YA dystopian trilogy […]
It’s weird to review a book we’ve all read.
What can I say about a book that’s already been read by just about everyone interested in reading it? I read this when it came out six years ago, and it was assigned for my lit class so I read it again. I’ll admit I was annoyed by this at first. I took the class to force myself to read literature I wouldn’t on my own and I don’t have any trouble finding books like The Hunger Games, but I think they just stuck this […]
A peace that blacked yer eye, a peace that split yer lip.
I think there are two ways to write about a not-first book in a series or trilogy: short and vague to avoid spoilers, or not. I’m gonna go with door number two because it’s impossible to write about this book without spoiling the resolution to the cliffhanger at the end of book one. So… If you don’t want to know what happens to Viola… … … … … … … … … Still here? Okay. This book just […]
YYou’re the Chosen One! No… You’re the Chosen One! Wait who’s the Chosen One?
Rating: 4/5 Summary: After spending the summer apart, Titus and Iolanthe are eagerly awaiting the start of term at Eton. Planning a romantic getaway in the Crucible is a lot easier when Atlantis isn’t trying to kill you. Before their relationship can pass the physical barrier, they stumble upon another great elemental mage. Is Iolanthe the Chosen One or is this other mage the Chosen One? Titus is trapped between the two with only his mother’s visions to guide him and they haven’t been helping. […]
