This is a classic, and deserves to be

The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart

February 21, 2024 by Marcella Leave a Comment

This book is a wonderful book, a classic, I have deemed it. I don’t actually know its status on whether it’s actually a classic, but that’s not important. I love the premise of this book, and I love the puzzles and the characters. The solutions to issues are just fun, and mostly whimsical. When they get caught, it’s for a good reason, a well explained one. The character dynamics are fun, and the way they clash and mesh is just perfection. To list a few […]

It’s a mystery to me but not the intended one

The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart

January 12, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

The Mysterious Benedict Society was an entertaining read, but it really felt familiar, like I’ve read this before. I saw someone make the comparison to Willy Wonka, and I can definitely see that as in there is a mysterious benefactor who wants/needs several children to accomplish a major goal (in this case defeating an enemy who may or may not be known to Mr. Benedict; it’s rather unclear how much he knows about what’s going on for much of the book), but there is something […]

Charming Kid’s Adventure

The Extraordinary Education of Nicholas Benedict by Trenton Lee Westover

March 27, 2019 by Manimama Leave a Comment

Nicholas Benedict is 9 years old and a very unusual child. He is afflicted with narcolepsy, which means that when he becomes excited or emotionally stressed, he falls asleep instantaneously wherever he is or whatever he is doing. He is extremely intelligent and observant, which is grating to the adults he is around. And Nicholas is an orphan, on his way to his newest orphanage, Rothschild’s End,  as this book opens. Nicholas arrives at a train station to meet Mr. Collum, the director of his […]

My Broken House Behind Me and Good Things Ahead

September 27, 2018 by Ellesfena 2 Comments

Today is a good day to review this book. The Mysterious Benedict Society is a book with an intriguing beginning, a suspenseful and funny middle, and a happy end (spoiler, I guess, but it’s also the first book in a series so the I’m sure the happy ending is short-lived). It’s the sort of book you want to read or review during a garbage week like this one. Reynard Muldoon is an orphan. As the only gifted child at his orphanage, he feels out of […]

Too Dangerous For Adults

October 15, 2017 by sabian30 3 Comments

The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart (2007) – I never really understood the YA (Young Adult) and MG (Middle Grade) labels on books until I read this.  With Harry Potter and the young heroes in Andre Norton’s books, the protagonist is a kid (and kids love to read them); however, they are not strictly YA or MG.  The reason is the writing style.  Trenton Lee Stewart shares an exciting adventure of four unique heroes, but the writing is simple and straightforward.  No complex […]
